Hey guys. Before you say anything yea i have looked through about a million different freaking posts in the archives.
A lot of it needs to be in the resources by the way
Ohk i have found the dimensions of the fcs tabs for the fins im going to make for this fish im making…
But i just need a lil bit of guidence when it comes to actually making the fin bases.
Just some theory ? Just making shure i have it all right
If the fin is more forward there is more drive ? the further back the more pivot in turns ?
The bigger the point (the round bit of the fin) of the fin the more drawn out the turns will be ? and the sharper the more pivotey the turns
Flex in fins gives forgivness and rake = drawn out turns??
ANYWAY…
I found out about where i want the fins to go but then how do i find where i should put the fcs plugs to make shure that the fins are in that place.
Im going to mark where the fcs plug will go onto the blank then lam and then use a hole saw to get down to the deck without going through.
Then resin in plugs with a dummy fin in the plugs to set cant etc etc. Then hot coat. etc etc.
Im starting to not really like fcs :S but i like removable fins
PLease ANYTHING will help lol. im a little bit unshure of a lot of it. but hopefully it’ll turn out well.
One last thing. I have been trying to search for a lot of my questions but the resources havnt really revealed a lot. So if you have ANYTHING at all
to share with design and building please create a resource with it… HELP SWAYLOCKS GROW and help to illiminate the continuation of these kind of questions
thanks, yea i re-read the post and it didnt make a lot of sense but thanks for desifering a bit of it
Thanks for that. Everything helps to ease the nerves of that first time doing something.
How far are fcs plugs usually apart. like if you had your fin base at 6 then you’d find the middle at 3" and how far apart from the centre would you mark for the plugs?
Cheater5, the best way to do it is to insert a fin in plugs and set the trailing edge where it should be. Then mark with pencil or ink around the plugs and here you are. Or you may measure from the trailing edge to the middle of the rear plug then to the middle of the front plug and mark two dots where you are supposed to route (or hole-saw, but just like Lavz, I can’t advise the router too much: easy and precise with templates, will allow for fin-box slot routing, too).
thanks guys. Could someone measure the distances in a straight line eg. back of trailing plug front of trailing plug back of leading plug front of leading plug all in a straight line. WOuld help
If you’re doing keel fins, you may want to think about using 3 plugs instead of 2-I’ve had FCS keels snap at the tabs because of the extra force that is on a keel vs. a fin with less base. I think that the easiest way to ensure that your plugs are in the right place is to get ahold of a fin made for FCS and use that as a template-just trace the tabs onto your new fin and you should be sweet.
Truuue i thought about it before but i didnt think that they’d actually SNAP. I’ll just put in two anyway as i only have two. Shud be fine. The fins arent going to be real traditional keels as im trying to put in so more newish features into this board. they’ll have a bit of rake and toe in and cant
