a few recent posts...

Well… a few recent posts have differed from the norm, more relaxed, slightly off topic and I think its nice to stop once in a while and take a break to look at the world around you, get inspired, and think of things slightly differently for a bit.

In that vein here’s another thread that might offer some insight to those around the forums and connect the previosly disconected…

So… apart from shaping and surfing what are your other hobbies?

A couple of mine to get the ball rolling:

Scuba Diving: My wife and I go everytime we have a little extra cahs and are saving to do our dive masters - we are currently advanced and also have our rescue certs. (I got to use some training rescuing two of my friends over the easter break. One from a cliff face off port cambell, the other with a lost boards and getting sucked towards the same cliff in a strong rip).

Art: Im really getting into my art at the moment, I havent done much since I finished studying it in '99 but Im really enjoying it. Aiming to have an exibition later in the year at a local gallery if all things go well. Ive also picked up the airbrush again (iwata HP-SBS) so Im having fun re-learning the lost skills from my teens and early 20’s.

Designing and making things: I enjoy designing and making stuff in general and get a kick out of modern design/traditional material mixes.

rock climbing is a major passion ranking up alongside surfing shock! bouldering in particular as the attraction for me isnt doing something mad and scary, just i love pushing myself physically and technically in a relaxed enviroment! sport climbing is good fun too.

i’d like to say i dabble in a bit of graphic design, however this is just me trying to learn photoshop at the moment!

when i’m back home though i just try to get outdoors doing as much as possible, feels like a waste not to! so mountain biking, walking, bit of xc running etc.

but unfortunately my main hobby at the moment seems to be sheer bewilderment in the closing stages of a degree…

Yer I with you on that one.

It’s nice to have a bit of diversity. Of course I’m planning another couple of boards but time an money constrants meen that still a way off, so when there no repairs in the shop and no waves I like to keep my self busy with some more handleable (is that a word) projects.

My project book is filling up Just got to remember to see one through before starting the next.

In between repairs and surfing I’m making some keel fins (very slowly), then its on to some long board skate board blanks, then maybe a hand plane for body surfing or some underwater camera housing or some more fins, hopefuly by then we’ll have some ways or enough money for the next board.

snowboarding…what a cross trainer…i bring over some surf style to the snow and some of my snow style to the sea

kayaking…there are some good creeks around here when it rains

pick up games of whatever…from basketball to ultimate frisbee

I’m with you, wrobo…snowboarding, definitely. Fortunately, there actually exists a ski resort only 4 hours from where I currently live in West Texas (only 2 more years…) There are few things like cutting up the corduroy at high-g. A few other random things that occupy my time… I build telescopes to look at the stars with, I have one planned that will be two telescopes side-by-side, like a giant binocular. If there is one thing that is awesome about West Texas, it is the dark skies very close to my house… I am refinishing a set of drums, hopefully they’ll be completed by the end of the year… I try to stay proficient with firearms (I found out I was decent at it in the Marine Corps; Expert 3rd Award Rifle, Expert 2nd Award Pistol).

Of course, I love to shape/glass (even sand/wetsand/polish!), and I am having a great time learning how to spray/airbrush, mistakes and all.

Other than that, study, study, study…biggest exam of my life looms June 22nd.

Oh, and playing with my boy Toby… Here he is chillin’ in the tent after a 6-mile hike…

You may or may not be able to tell from my name, but i like brewing beer. English bitters are my faves, and i dont mind a well made American pale ale full of cascades and amarillo hops, mmmmm. I’ve been brewing all grain beers for a few years now, and its fun and the result is great. I’m actually going to a brewday this saturday, gunna surf with a few of the guys in the morning, then we’ll be brewing and drinking beer from lunch onwards, gunna be a long day!!

well apart from surfing, making boards, snowboarding and climbing im a keen designer maker, make all sorts from furniture to sculptures to renovating cars.

currently far too many projects on and never enough time, got two boards on the go, mid converting my t4 transporter and have an Mg midget in the middle of restoration. also starting playing with video… just bought an underwater housing!

I also like making stuff. Anyone going to the Maker Faire?

http://makerfaire.com/

When I’m not wanking I’m surfing and vice versa. No more wanking until the blisters heal on my hands.

I’m one of those sad fuckers that really don’t have any hobbies. I don’t even view surfing as a hobby. I just do it every single day. Maybe if I took some time off from surfing I could see it as a hobby. When I was a ding monkey I viewed that as a hobby because I sure didn’t make much money from that and it was fun. Computers used to be a hobby but as Herb said they are taking control.
