A hot coating issue?

When I hot coated the bottom of my board with RR epoxy, there were lots of little pinhole type impressions and a few pencil eraser sized spots where the resin didn’t quite take. Is this common? I haven’t done the deck yet because I don’t know if I did anything wrong.

Any advice is much needed.

Thanks!

I have found that I get fewer pinholes if I laminate and hotcoat on a falling temperature. As for the spots where “the resin didn’t quite take…”, could be a contamination issue or just not enough resin used. It also helps to warm the resin up first to get it to spread out better. Were you using RR epoxy with additive F?

No additive F was used.

Just the 2 parts resin, 1 part hardner. It was spreading wery well, but when it hit a few spots, the resin kept runing away from it. I think that my greasy brother might have been fiddling about with my board and got his greasy finger prints on it, causing the resin not to adhere. I wish I had a shaping room under lock and key.

Bad combo there. Even with additive, please avoid greasy finger prints.

John’s right. Not to mention cool & damp weather, as well as hotcoating too long after laminating.

All 4 add up to those voids & the apocryphal epoxy hotcoating bad experience.

did you wipe down with alcohol before hot coating?

No I did not wipe down with alcohol,

Is house hold rubbing alcohol what you use? I did wipe it down with a clean damp rag though and did sand the glass to create a stronger mechanical bond. I was glassing on a falling temp, but a car was brought into the the garage afterwards, probably increacing the tempature. The glass job dose not look bad in my eyes, noting that can’t be fixed, but I see now(I think) how to prevent what happend on the bottom from duplacating on the deck.

About the alcohol, Could that damage/ discolor any thing?

Thanks.

Maybe the exhaust fumes were responsible, too… What do you think?

Possible? Maybe, I don’t know the charistics of resin.

I just hot coated the deck and had a much better experience.

I gave the deck a good sanding with 50 grit and wiped the deck clean with a rag.

Hot coated on a falling tepature.

When my mom came home, I made her park on the street.

I think that the biggest cause of this prolblem was waiting so long to hot coat, which I was warned about from one person, and then unwarned to some extent from another. No ones fault but my own though (and maybe my greasy brother).

All that’s left to do is sand and finish.

What’s the most common way of finishing an epoxy board after sanding?

Thanks,

Austin.
