Yeah Herb! Those blades will make you throw your others away. They are fairly hard to find too, Foam EZ is one of the few places I know of that carry them. Pretty seldom I can give a hint to a tool maestro like yerself, glad you picked one up.

I assume you guys are talking about the microplane ‘‘surform’’ blades, they are the s*#t.
Clark started selling those several years ago, they will make you throw rocks at other blades.
I only use the round one, for doing swallow cracks, but it eats wood; even the caxita stringers
in Rhyno Foam cut easily with that blade. You can get them from Atlantic Surfoam in Melbourne.
Aloha Keith:
These are certainly one of the most useful tools in my tool chest. I have a whole range of their rasps and use them on every board I shape. I have been using them for about five years and just assumed everyone knew about them. I have to agree with the comment about using them on swallowtails. I just shaped one and the round rasps are great for dealing with the crack.
But my favorite use for them is when shaping triple stringers there is nothing better for dialing in the side stringers at the rail, they will even allow you to cut against the wood grain. I long ago gave up using a sharp block plane for this job in favor of a microplaner blade.
I buy all of my blades directly from the manufacturer.

Their customer service is really good!

Howzit Robin - yup the round ones are handy too, I have a bunch of them; way better than rattail files or whatever else. I’ve found some of them even cheaper than the MFr. web page on EBay - for instance their “spice grater” which was originally a woodworking rasp… I noticed on the web page that they’ve just last month discontinued the small surform blade, which is one of my faves. Bummer. But they don’t wear out very fast either. In fact the only problem I ever had with a microplane was that I managed to crumple/snap one of the bigger round rasps one day… for those who don’t already use them, definitely worth checking out as a “must have” in the tool locker.
Aloha Keith:
I’m bummed to hear about the smaller surform blade, as that was also one of my favorites because it cuts a little more aggressively. Thankfully I still have a few blades stashed away and they do last awhile.
I also have had one of the smaller round rasps fold on me, I’m now every careful about how hard I push on them as it almost made a mess of the bottom when it folded!

Is that a piece of rebar?
For the crack, I usually just use my Dremel with 60 grit drum on the rotater. The Dremel gets the job done fast, and leaves a super clean finish on the stringer. Is there a reason why you guys are sticking to the round rasp?
I like Dremels…do most of my gunsmithing with it as well.Picked up a dental attachment foe mine at a local garage sale for 2 bucks !
EP’s pic is of a rattail sureform…got a load of those.
I prefer using wood carving tools for the stringer in buttcracks…good stuufff !
Ya,Keith, took me awhile… but I’m very suprized/pleased… at how well the microblade works.
Got some new foam Sat.@ EZ…Blanks that I really like…I guess it’s time to give the locals around here more headaches and lower their wave count.lol.
