if your boards are all about reducing planing area through lift from the fin, why not start with a smaller board to begin with? it will cause less weight, so less fin area is needed to lift the board and consequentlyless drag?
Good question, and I suppose that the first answer is that having a smaller board to start with is a fine way to go.
There are a couple of other points though:
-
Sometimes in the waves I am riding I need more area, so it’s handy to have it available when needed.
-
All else being equal an increase in weight improves the thrust/drag ratio . . . . so there is no drag disadvantage with a heavier board.
To take the weight reduction scenario to its ultimate conclusion we would have a board and rider combination weighing nothing. . . which would mean zero thrust, zero drag and no movement !

I was wondering if you ever used conscious alterating stuff???
If not, i am willing to send you over some shrooms from the netherlands, if you promise to let us know how you experience them of course…
CURIOUS!!!
Wouter
Hi Wouter,
Fact is that everything alters the consciousness, so I have to say yes.
I’m not into shrooms really, except the champignon, golden bolete, and horse mushroooms.
I have never done LSD or anything like that, although as youngsters we smoked, drank (Tequila !!) , and ate each others prescription drugs.
Also we used to have, in my parents household a wonderful tonic called Marshalls Phospherine, which was 10% quinine phosphate. This stuff could be bought over the counter at the chemist’s shop, and was great for english examinations and other creative stuff.
These days I don’t smoke. . . have a herb garden, mostly calming stuff ( poppies, chamomile, valerian, and lavender) plus some medicinal stuff like feverfew. Also we are into colloidal silver, take enough and the body becomes a giant battery ( silver is a great conductor)
Then there’s the honey mead. . . the current brew has orange and rosemary.
Used to meditate too but it’s kind of noisy around here these days
Here are a few ripples being ridden on the 17 footer, the gps cable software is on the blink so all I know so far is that it’s less than 23 mph, I’m going to guess and then send myself some wax later as a prize.

I’d go easy on the colloidal silver, you are at risk of silver toxicity which is pretty horrible!
“Long-term use of silver preparations can lead to argyria, a condition in which silver salts deposit in the skin, eyes, and internal organs, and the skin turns ashen-gray. Many cases of argyria occurred during the pre-antibiotic era when silver was a common ingredient in nosedrops. When the cause became apparent, doctors stopped recommending their use, and reputable manufacturers stopped producing them”
Squid it’s my only hope of getting dark skin. . . . at least I’m not eating uranium !
no probs then…and grey skin will go nicely with your orange wettie.
…everyone get ready for Tom Blokes’ next reincarnation
as Silver Surfer of the Mount!
