I posted up a new project with kevlar, paulownia and EPS that I was working on a few weeks back, we surfed the crap out of it for a solid week and I filmed some of my friends riding it to correlate their feelings of flex or not with what I was seeing from land…so far so good, the board goes great and thats more than I could have asked for for such a far flung and awkward build.
and here’s the short video of the thing in motion…never made a short movie before so bear with my amateur skillz! There’s some clips of a few other of my boards in there also, mostly a 6’9" hull/fish singlefin hybrid thing and a 4’11" edge spoon/velo mashup:
Very interesting project. Couldn’t get the video either, it traced back to the original thread. Is it possible that I’ve seen this board in the water around Vta? If not, you have a clone somewhere.
That swallow tail, single fin hull looks like it has the right combination of hull trim and fishy looseness. Is that the one with the single to double concave? Very nice vid.
In order to view the vid, you need to copy and paste the url into your browser. Clicking on it takes you to the other thread.
ya the fishy hull has a double to single concave through it; it’s been my daily driver for quite a while…it’s big but it moves really well for me and glides nicely for everyone that i’ve lent it out to…it’s my baby
you could have easily seen it in the water down near LA or at Lowers one morning, other than that its not likely; and if there’s a clone, guaranteed it isn’t built like this one hahahaha…or if someone did there is some serious cosmic action at work, or im being watched a little too closely
here’s a little better view of the core and what’s going on with it:
Nice, Ryan! Helluva (hullova?) lot of work with the wood, I'd skip that, haha. Fiber mobetta IMO.
Did you see the Kevlar fish we did last year? I bladed out the tail to bring back some of the flex lost to the stiffer fiber, it has worked out really well and is stronger than dirt. Our ''normal'' stuff still rides better, though.
The wood is the first thing to go on the next one, i’m working it through in my head right now but for this built the wood was readily available from some other boards and thought i’d put it to use! Any kind of composite material would do just about the same thing, i’m mostly looking at unidirectional stuff and the possibility of inlayed tubes which will probably not end up being the way i go!
would love to email you with some ideas and see what your experience is…shoot me an email at ryan@pointconceptsurf.com if you’ve got time!
Thanks, Ryan. We're always glad to see others using modern lamination technology, we don't want to be lonely while we lead the rest of the industry into the future. I'll shoot you an em soon.
Wow! nice video, thanks for fixing it. Now that I’ve seen it, that definitely wasn’t you that I saw. The guy had a bladey/velo type board but different outline. There was some real pretty surfing in your vid. Made me feel like a kid at Malibu watching Liddle and Bowler and cronies work the face, very nice. Also, that was some smoking Flamenco guitar!
