Why do websites like Swaylocks have Status Symbols,Carp,Barnicks, kooks, craps etc. BECAUSE people feel inferior and need a label to keep things/people suppressed and ignorant.
like some govt’s and churches did with the Bible.
But wait Herb ,you’re full of shit ! okay but why do the moderators have no status other than moderator…it’s call a dictatorship,of which I can no longer be a part of …bye.
Its interesting, isn’t it, to feel like you know people well enough just through Sways that you’d like to have all kinds of conversations with them. But, of course, a large part of the good here is that people generally stay well-focused on surfcraft (most are better than I am at that).
Would it be too much to ask for an extra discussion board - kind of like Industry Talk - where all topics are welcome? Of course, no porn, racism, etc. that would be genuinely offensive if some honest surf-student wandered in, but it wouldn’t be terrible to have a place where Swaylockers could feel free to discuss religion, politics, etc… I like this place not only because of the vast storehouse of information, but also becasue of the personalities. Part of what’s good about those personalities is that they’re all multi-dimensional, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing to embrace.
I’d be happy to PayPal some costs, if that would help…
My opinion only; Check out the header…Swaylock’s Surboard Design Forum. Sure, we get distracted, sidetracked, into surfing or surf culture but Swaylock’s is what it is because most participants like the way it is run. If you like the other stuff, there are places on the net to that. Sorry if a certain amount of moderating offends folks.
If Mike wants to change things, that is a different story. It’s his baby.

Anybody go to Eric Hobb’s paddleout at San O’ on Sunday? We lost another true waterman who followed his Father’s example.
I think that is agreat idea. I think it would be interesting to hear some input on topics other than surfing, because they are still coming from the viewpoints of surfers. If someone voiced their opinion on something like politics every once in a while it would not make this any less of a surf forum. Or maybe we could have a discussion on your political party compared to the board you ride?

Eeee…yeah…but this area is called “General Discussion”, isn’t it?
In my opinion I think the general part needs to remain in some form, because all that philosophizing, history, notions, debate etc. is what contributes todesign…I can’t imagine that all design occurs only in response to previous design. If so, how freaking boring can it get (6’2" thruster 6’2" thruster 6’2" thruster…)
I think the moderators around here do a good job keeping these plates spinning. Benny’s idea of a separate placewithin Swaylock’s is okay if necessary someday. Actually my only complaint about the moderators is that their moderator status sometimes seems to have cut back their frequency or quantity of general contributions…
Swaylock’s is very much like an all time favorite surf break.
Not too long ago, it was a pretty secret break…fun and uncrowded waves for all…folks were ripping - while still sharing waves. A very mellow vibe…
Like any secret spot, word soon got out and the crowds slowly increased. Some of the early riders left to find other emptier or undiscovered spots…others only go out when it’s REALLY good…others just go no matter what…
And like all good breaks that attract a crowd…the locals established a pecking order and some were eventually forced - because of outsiders who drop in and cut you off with no respect to the purity and traditions of the break - to become “enforcers” as a means of self policing the break. They call them “Moderators.”
Unfortunate as it may be, Enforcers/Moderators are a necessary evil at many crowded breaks to keep them from going down the crapper like some carnival breaks out there…

Ditto. Swaylock’s is addictive because of the diversity of thought. Even though I don’t always agree with everyone here… and never agree with some people, I like the interaction. Off topic stuff helps draw a better picture of what makes people do what they do. “An artist is working when they’re looking out the window”.
As long as we are civil in our banter, I think the diversity keeps it interesting. If the discussions were limited to what resin to use, and EPS vs Poly, Most of us would probably loose interest after a few visits. I know how to make surfboards, and where to get materials… I’m more interested in what makes people (other surfers) tick.
