A tale of 2 twin fins. Need help from you guys

I have 2 twins, a fish, and a more modern twinny/fishy thing. The fish is free rail to rail and i really dig it. The twinny i have trouble with ( there's another thread about round rails, but this is different ). Regardless of fins, its sometimes feels that the nose wants to lift up out of the water. I can get around it but sometimes its a pain in the arse!.

I have attached outline pics, and close ups of the tails, and rocker pics. I think ( just looking at the pics, and just by "gut" feel, that the fins on the twinny should move up a few inches. BOTH boards have fins 7" from the swallow tips. I also think the tail rocker is too much on the twinny, but would like some advice from you guys.

Fish 6'2 x 22 x 16'' tail

Twinny thingy 6'3 x 20.5 x 16'' tail.

Both home made so lots of faults at every step, but the fish is just super fun, and the twinny, while it can have moments of awesomeness, can be a struggle when the nose lift thing happens.

Any advice would be much appreciated guys.

Cheers

hey Beerieeee

Re the PM ...if you need some box's ...no probs

Re the twinny, it's hard to comment from the other side of a screen but it does look like alot of rocker which seems to start from just behind half way !!

Most twinny's I've ogled are relaxed as far rocker curve go's ... your's seems to accelerate out thru the tail.

MR's I've run a rocker bar on run 3.3/4to 4.1/4" in the nose and about 1.5" to 1.3/4" in the tail.

Bear in mind most twinny's have healthy vee's thru them to enable flater rocker to maintain drive and control skatey slip thru a usually wider tail assisted by fairly sharp savage swallow tails to dig into the H2O for projection ...... an accelareted tail rocker on a twinny would go against all of the above

The Indo twinzer I built has a 1.5/8" tail rocker !!!

But as with all surf craft its the combination of things that make it all come home in the end

Anyway let me know about the box's

You're the second person to mention the tail rocker. Bummer, but i think i have an idea mate.

THIS!!!

Hopefully moving the fins forward should help the nose to stay down. That'll bring the rear edge of the keels up to 10'' from the tail. I couldn't really get them any farther back coz of the other boxes. But, the thruster fins all the way up in the box should be right around 11 1/2 from the tail. If the keels feel too squirelly that far up, i'll put the thruster fins in, plus a trailer. Something will happen anyway. Live and learn!

BF, maybe thats too much work for one board, would it be easier to build another in the future and use what you have learnt about the rocker and fins to get the next one schmicko ??? is there room to make the adjustments you are thinking of ??? and have you tried many diff fins to see how that alters the ride ??? some pics are stillloading, they prob make my post make no sense ....

Yeah i thought about that, but i plan on making a board next year anyway, and im not 100% happy with it. I have tried some long thin rakey aipa twins, which so far are the best, but i still had the problem with the nose trying to come up. I figure with the tail rocker starting so far up, moving the fins up might help.

BTW, that board came from a 7’ minimal blank, and the board is 6’3’'. Big lesson learnt there. I should’ve made a 7’er!!!

Cheers, how;s that bat tail quad coming along that some legendary homebrewer from down south ordered?!! haha.

get the foam for a bat tail quad on Sunday but who is this so-called legend home brewer you speak of ???   she'll be shaped up Mon or Tuesday and some piccies shall be forwarded to you for your inspection and perousel ( prob spelt wrong, trying too be smart and looked dumber ha ha ha  ), anyways, lucky you got in when you did coz the Xmas rush has begun....

Lookin forward to it mark!

In the meantime im playing around in the shed. I dont know if the new positions will improve anything, but it was fun to muck around. THe probox install is just too hard to get wrong. Here's some pics of possible new setups. I havent sanded them down yet, but wont take long when i get the time to get in the shed again. Interestingly, the front 1/3 of the keels are now right under my back foot, im hoping it'll loosen it up!!. Also, the yellow and gray as quads might work, but both sets are close to the rail, and overlap each other, might be too loose?!.

Fingers crossed. At worst, i'll ride it how it was before, so no big deal really, and i'll try harder next board.

Tried the yellow and gray set this morning in tiny waves. The only decent wave i got was chest high, but it felt good, no nose lifting, and turned great. Much better than before. Surfs picked up and should be head high ( maybe a bit more?! ) tomorrow am before work. Hope to get a better feel, but so far it feels better than it was before. Didn't have high expectations ,but it seems to have worked ok so far.

Well sometimes you just can't tell !!!

This could well turn out to be a secret cluster setting off the future

Good stuff ..... I hope better conditions will confirm for you

Hard to tell, as the waves were head high plus, but pretty crap shape, mostly closeouts. I spun it out once off the bottom, but yeah, couldn't tell much from todays waves. Good to get wet before work though.
