a Tsunami relief party on Kauai

Hey Kokua,

Kauai has always had a special place in my heart ever since the my first surf safari there in the late 70’s. My last trip was too long ago in 2000, when I was having a long distance relationship with a woman who lived in Hanamaulu. I would definitely want to participate in a get together and meet some of the other board members from Kauai and abroad. Even though its only like spittin distance for me to get there, there are some money and scheduling matters I’d have to overcome in order to participate. It would be so cool to meet Steve Lis as I’ve only had phone contact with he and his wife when I ordered a board from him last year. Have you ever glassed any of his boards? Anyway, this Kauai Tsunmami relief party is a great idea, I’ll be doing my best to make it…

Howzit foamdust, Would really like it if you can make it over for the relief party. No I haven’t glassed any of Steve’s boards, he has asked me a few times to do some for him but since I have a commitment to my regular shapers I can’t fit him in, But we still remain good friends. Aloha,Kokua

Hey Kokua, and EVERYBODY. I know you guys are lining up people already but it seems to me we can fairly easily (at this point) change to the backup weekend (one week later) if that would make life easier. The longer we wait the harder it’s going to be to change it though. So, I’d suggest that anybody with a preference SPEAK UP NOW if they want to do it the last weekend in April (29th, 30th, May 1st) instead of the one before (April 22, 23, 24th).

I think we’re probably also still very flexible on whether we do specific events on, eg, Friday, Saturday or Sunday, if that makes life work out better.

Howzit Keith, As far as changing dates it shouldn’t be a problem on this end, except for possibly the 23rd of april since that’s a back-up date for the Quick silver kid’s contest that I am a judge for. One thing about that contest is it is for younger kids so it usually ends around 3:00. but at the irons contest which was for kids 14 and under they still had about 140 surfers and it didn’t end til 6:30 P.M. If we go with the earlier dates we can do it on Friday or Sunday. Another thing to think about is that the later the date the more possbility of no surf since the swells start hitting less frequent as summer approches. Next we need to start finding out who is coming. Aloha,Kokua

i concur june 2 swell days at over 6’, may -4 swell daysat or over 6’, april-8 swell days at or over 6’… fridays are cooler though saturdays are likely more dense attendance…oahu guys come after work unlessthe take friday off…mainland guys fares mid week means they will be here already…ambrose…earl has the no hassle cars 8088223656 tell I sent ya

Hey all - I have no desire to push this off any later, was just saying that if Kokua had a conflict the weekend of the 22nd we still had the option of doing it later.

It does seem to me that we might get more people on Sunday than Friday, though. So maybe stick with the earlier weekend but do the main event on Sunday? Whaddayathink? Not that we won’t surf the other days too, I hope, maybe on other parts of this island.

YES…

Howzit Keith, Don’t let me hang the party up I’ll work it out, plus if I’m doing a contest you will get to see some of our local talent do their thing.Aloha, Kokua

week of the 22,aprilthats a friday the 22 thecheap fly days are 19 20 21…get ye with the program if’n ya wish to concieve byond the norm…I thin; the date has been nailed on the wall kokua and keith are starting to appologise to each other an ’ say but after you an stuff.so heck its the 22-23-24 and preambles and post pardoms…There’s a bag in washington for transporting boards message Soup in the messages…are we to be graced w/ a chipfish or a bert or a josh, heck its closer than bigsur…ambrose…

OK, I agree w/ Ambrose, we have the (long) weekend nailed down, still get to figure out what things to do on what days… but that’s all good… I’ll bring a bag full of boards… and goodies…

So where’s all this happening?

Hanalei?

hmm April at the Princeville wonder how much that’ll be…

Anyway might be interesting to check it out and meet everyone.

Maybe we should all chip in and pay to get both Bert and Greg over for all they’ve done…

I’ll mention it to CMP/Surfgear again next weekend…

I don’t see the 22nd being listed as a holiday on my official Federal Reserve holiday calendar though.

Its a standard weekend for some of us.

Yup, that’s why we’re thinking the main surf session will be on Sunday. But events on Friday pau hana (luau?), Saturday(hmm…shapers & glasser get together? Surf movie? can we rent out the Y?), Sunday (surf session), and Monday for some folks… I’m probably arriving on Thurs & leaving Tues to get cheapest airfare…

I think the Sunday session will be at Hanalei, others undecided but open to all suggestions…

Howzit Keith, I can talk to my friend who manages the Y in Haena. They also have cabins for rent at a very decent price and it’s about 200 yards from my house. I need to get together with Ambrose a cabwannie to work out some details. I don’t know about putting together a luau, I was thinking about bring the BBQ down and doing some teri chicken or whatever. We also need to get the raffle tickets together (not the air fare) for the gathering, I can see about setting up a table at Big Save Market to sell tickets since it’s done quite often by other groups. I talked with Charlie of Hanalei surf co ( he owes me big time ) about some prizes and I’ll talk to Bobby from Kai Kane also. I just hope I don’t have to work a contest that weekend. Another thing about the Y is there are 2 shapers ( Mark Angell and Mark Sausen ) who have shaping rooms within 75 yards of the Y and my glassing set up is nearby.Aloha,Kokua

Oh man…I gotta figure out a way to get there…

Howzit Kokua - that all sounds good. When I was thinking luau I wasn’t thinking the whole roast pig thing (although if somebody were to volunteer I wouldn’t be against it!) BBQ and such would be excellent. We should be thinking easy and fun, let it grow from there…

Tenover, just buy a few raffle tickets and cross your fingers…

I will collect some raffle prizes too.

Maybe the cabins near the Y would be a good gathering place for out of towners & festivities?

Man this should be good.

aloha,

Keith

OK, I just put a Brewer 9’6" board for sale in the marketplace section, the money will go to the Tsunami fund. As a bonus if anyone in Hawaii buys it (and it really belongs there!) I will deliver it for free to Oahu or Kauai in April. I just bought my plane ticket for the Swaynami so I will be counting the days till then… if nobody here buys the surfboard I will put it on Ebay, but I really thought all you Swaylockers should have a shot at it first.

Howzit Keith,Talked with Rick Holt yesterday about coming and he said he and Topper ( R.R. epoxy rep) would try to make it and a friend who has developed a new fin system also is coming. Things are happening.Aloha,Kokua

told black burn yesterday, hanalei dawnrunner, and he said

“tsunami ,they should send relief money to samoa those guys got hammered”

he also said ‘Oh how many guys are gonna be out at hanalei?’

jimmy said ’ haena Y camp is way out there I spent the weekend out there last week and all there is limited to cannons and tunnels an everything is back further back .if it were at lydgate its more centralized ’

So I say this central to accss concept doesnt have the sparkle of the Princeville Lanai but access to polihale dawner without a 3hour drive has its merits…ambrose…a thought

Who’s gonna drive the bus?

Thanks Jeff for offering up your services for pick up and delivery for gas money maybe we can finally get some miles on that jeep, ambrose…

dont worry mom Jeff is a real careful driver
