i’m going to lam a 9’8 board tomorrow and i want to make sure i have the amounts right. going by surfersteve.com’s resin amounts i’m GUESSING for a 9’8 i will need about: Bot.- 55oz=8cc cat, Top- 60oz=10cc cat
this is just a wild guess, i’d like some more professional ideas at it. i have 1.5 gal of s249a i’m using for the lam and hotcoat. so what would everyone recommend for amounts.
Howzit barefeet, Looks like to much resin and not enough catalyst. At most you might use 40 oz on the bottom and even that’s alot, maybe you should use UV resin to minimize waste. For the deck I’d say about 48 - 50 oz resin and once again this is alot of resin. Since it sounds like your first lam job, it’s hard to figure how much catalyst you should use, but I use more, but then again I’ve got a lot of boards under my belt. Aloha,Kokua
I’m working on my third glass job. The largest was a 9’0. On the 9’0 I think I used about 48 ounces for the bottom and and 54 ounces for the top. A lot was wasted due to inexperience. I’d second Kokua’s recommendation to try the UV resin, if it’s available to you. It would allow you to really take your time and get a clean lam done. Looking back, I think I would have used it. In fact, I may try it on my next lam. 9’ 8" is a good size. I just took mine out today. Post some pics when your done.
I’ll third Kokua’s advice on using UV to start with… …if not available, then at least split your batch in two parts and do the majority of the bottom and one rail finished with one batch. Then continue with your second batch on the rest of the bottom and the other rail. You can adjust your amount of resin/catalyst on batch #2; so the learning begins…
