Hey all. Total newb here but having lots of fun. I’m finishing my board, filling dings and pulled out the fin plugs so that I can glass on some quads. Unfortunately I had know idea there was differentce between lam resin and sanding resin. I used lam resin as a hot coat and now its tacky and hard to sand. I’ve got about 75% of the bottom glassed with lam resin. How the hell do I fix this? Should I sand back the lam resin coat and redo it with sanding resin?
There are some significant bumps and streaks that need to be flattened.
Clean the board well with acetone and then hot coat over the board and you’ll be fine. If anyone asks what you did just tell them: " I did a cheater fill coat", and everyone is happy. That will give you a little bit of play when you sand too.
I’m going with Gene’s advice. Just put on a coat of sanding resin and its cured now. Hopefully your right man. I’m concerned about the layer of lam resin underneath but I will trust your experience.
Gene has it. Polyester resin is an air inhibited product. Without a barrier to the air it will not harden completely. Mix in a little styrene and wax additive, and it becomes sandable. So, any lam resin that is sealed with a coat of sanding resin will eventually reach full cure. While it may seem like a waste of an expensive resource, it is the best solution.
