i cant get a hold of styrene in my area and was wondering what would happen if i mixed acetone with the resin and wax for my gloss coat?
Acetone is a solvent used to breakdown elements. I don’t know what raitos you are talking about. Check the link below as an option. It is suncure supergloss coat. Mixed and ready to go. I haven’t used it yet, but I have used other suncure products with much success. They make good stuff. http://www.surfsource.net/Manufacturing/sun%20cure/index.htm
L.M.: I’ve used acetone to thin old lam resin in a pinch. The problem is that it evaporates so quickly you could get some funky results in a critical finish coat application like glossing. Wait until you can get what you need or if you need to do another finish coat to fill voids, weave or pinholes then just use what you used for the hotcoat. Level it well with your brush application to keep it as thin as possible and go from there. You’ll get the job done and at the very least you can do a sanded finish with this last coat. …Acetone is a solvent. It actually destroys the properties of resin. …Long story, short,it will cause separation in the surfacing agent as it rises to the top of the coat.So you end up with areas/streaks/puddles of gooie resin in your coat, along with the coat being weakened by the breakdown caused by the acetone…I have heard(only rumors)that some people have used liquid acrylic in a lacquer base…but I don’t think I would go there either…Styrene is the only thing that I know of that will get the job done right.Herb
I was afraid it would cause some funky shit to happen, i guess ill just use lam resin and wax and only add a little catylst so it have time to fill in the pinholes. thanks
…If you have surfacing agent(surfacing agent=styrene w/ parafinwax, either 2% which is standard or 4%)just add say an extra 10-15cc of surfacing agent to say a pint. This will work!Herb
…If you have surfacing agent(surfacing agent=styrene w/ > parafinwax, either 2% which is standard or 4%)just add say an extra 10-15cc > of surfacing agent to say a pint. This will work!Herb ill try that, but i think i heard someone on this forum say that if you add too much wax soln. it turns cloudy. is that true or just BS???
just buy some glossing resin. applied properly in a controlled enviroment you can’t beat it.
…I’ve added maybe 2 or 3 times the recommended amount of surfacing agent to resin ratio.I even add extra, extra styrene, and surfacing agent to sanding/gloss resin with no ill effects, like clouding.I’m sure if you add too much it could get weird, but I mix small batches all the time with more that an obscene amount, and it usually works out okay. …What Gene says is the truth though,if you can get fresh glossing resin ,you can beat it by a mile.Herb

i cant get a hold of styrene in my area and was wondering what would > happen if i mixed acetone with the resin and wax for my gloss coat? You can substitute laquere thinner, it contains a small amount of acetone, but don’t use straight acetone. Try an experiment, pour off a small amout of wax solution, add acetone to it, it will congeal and seperate the wax.

Hey Gene,>>> How’s the new facility coming alone? I hope, no news is good news.>>> --E. P. going good skip. brand new building. dealing with the city of ventura has been a pleasure. hope to be operational in 3 weeks max. thanks, gene
