Ok, so I´ve happily surfed this board all summer and I love it for when the waves are small. However, when they are picking up some more size, I´m having a hard time not to slip around, which I guess is the case with single finners (never surfed one before). I´d like to be able to hold a somewhat higher line on the wave sometimes, so I´ve bought two fcs fusion boxes to get options. The fin I have now is pretty skinny but 7 inches long. Where should I place them? Align the trailing edge of the rail fins with the leading edge of the middle fin? A little further up? Any help would be appreciated!
Only when the fin is too small, or incorrectly positioned. The other contributor can be a tail outline that is too ‘‘hippy.’’ Don’t tar all single finners with that brush of loose and slippy. Photos will be very helpful in providing an appropriate answer to your situation.
EDIT: noticed your attachment. Seems to be a fin area problem. Fin box would make it easier to correct. Sides, close to the rail should solve the issue. Shouldn’t need much fin, on the sides. 2 or 3 inches should get the job done.
Thank you for the advice! I think you´re right that it´s a fin area problem, and I didn´t mean to slam all singlefinners, surely they can be done much better than my attempt. How far from the back fin should I place them, given the size you´re suggesting?
As close to the rail as possible. Plug depth will dictate that. If it were me I’d use no toe-in, and no cant. Make it a widowmaker setup.
Thanks for that, I´ll consider no cant and no toe-in. I meant how far ahead of the mid fin should i place them? In the axis parallell to the board.
In line with the leading edge of the main fin. That is the classic widowmaker setup.
Great! I´ll give it a try, seems interesting!
Interesting - thanks Bill, I never knew what the “widowmaker” setup was! I agree, have never had a problem with my single fin boards ‘slipping around’, and I generally prefer my single fins without sidebites.
Here’s another approach, from Greenlight…
Huck, you beat me to it!
Here’s a downloadable link to the fin position layout diagram if anyone needs it.
Brian Do you also have fin layout for for twinzer style Fish and Bonzers?
