Hey chrisp your on the ball I saw sheldrakes board a couple of years ago in a magazine and tough that it would be a cool way to build a board as i had access to a cnc cutting machine at the time.
I have change a few thing which i tough might improve the board, I vacuumed bagged the top/bottom decks as well as the rails off moulds and used the ribbing to support the hole project. so you don’t get the ribs dictating the shape of the rails.
I see from the thread that you linked in that they used a probox maybe you have some more thoughts on this issue larry?
the fin i have on at the moment are just a set of fcs with tabs ground off and glassed on
Hi Larry
I don’t have a bog this was just a home project, as i have said eariler I am just a newbie to surfing and dont want to be telling people how to build surf boards way too much experience out there, but i have attached a couple more pic to show how i did it.
I first made moulds for the decks and rails so that i could vacuum bag the parts (basically learning by doing hahaha) then vacuumed to whole project together with a vacuum bag system
I cut 2 set of ribbing the first to make the moulds the second for the finished board, the ribs I have cut from a birch Ply as it was to hand, I guess what I would like to do with the next one is to use more environmentally friendly materials doing a bit of research into that at the moment,
But what I have realised is that I need to consider the fin system before I build the next one
Not just a gimmick. Engineering studies conclude that adjustments to toe can generate as much as a 20% improvement in lift! And these results released before they've even had chance to test effects of splay and vertical placement.
You can and will feel a difference.
Hey 4way, can you post a link to the study you reference above or where you found it? Id like to read it…
Thanks
As one of the fin system participators in the study we've received a comprehensive hard copy of the report (50+ pages).
I'm going to contact the chief engineer and find out if there's an on-line link to it from the university that we can refer to. Otherwise we might create our own on our website but will have to check if there's any copyright issues.. I'll keep you posted.
