I am looking for advice as to where I should plan a trip. I am a pretty poor surfer. I am comfortable to about head high lefts. My backside surfing is pretty pathetic. I want to improve, I don’t have a home break to speak of seeing that my home is about an hour and a half from the Jersey shore and I am going to school in western New York probably 7 hours from the shore. I have surfed in Portugal as well as Puerto Rico. Portugal was fun but I went in the summer and the waves were no bigger than chest high. I would like something more challenging. Rincon in Puerto Rico was definitely more challenging but the two days when there was swell I didn’t get many waves because the crowd was pretty intense.
I wonder if anyone can think of a trip get me a lot of time surfing with decent waves and small crowds. Nothing too dangerous because keep in mind I suck.
Thanks for any help.
P.S. My timeframe would be March, or June
btw I built this surfboard that has been ridden just a handfull of times.
If you like long lefts then go to Peru. Check the video “The Peru Project.” The airfare to Lima is pretty cheap compared with other South American destinations. You will definitely need to hire a guide though.
I have been to peru, didnt surf but loved it. Maybe I wouldnt feel bad about ignoring the rest of the country while I surf. hummm I hadnt really considered it but after a quick look it seems promising.
Costa Rica was my first thought probably not a bad idea for an intro level surf trip. Lots of very helpful information on this site about costa
March is on the early side of the south swell season would I expect less frequent swells or weaker ones? Have you ever done Costa Rica in march Soulstice?
I’m sorry if this ends up hijacking your thread, but …
I was thinking of starting a similar thread. I have the entire month of August off (between the bar exam and real life), and would like to take a week long trip somewhere consistent. The only catch is that I’ll be traveling with my girlfriend. Wherever it is must be affordable, consistent for surf, and must have some non-surf activities for my girlfriend while I surf (like a pool at the hotel, a spa, or a nice beach to sit on).
Initially I thought about Costa Rica (consistent and affordable), but I’m afraid that it will either be too big for her to surf that time of year, or that she will be bored on the beach. Other considerations include Morocco (not very consistent that time of year?), Portugal / Spain / Southwest France (not as affordable, not as consistent).
Feel free to make all the “ball and chain” jokes, I deserve them.
