Advice/Help needed

Hi there, I am a mature art student and recently had a local gallery approach me to use a painting for an exhibition to do with the year of the sea in the UK. A lot of people have commented on the fact that it would look great on a surfboard and was wondering if anyone new if there was a way to market the design, or to show people safely in the hope they might be interested.

thanks in advance

the danger of showing people a design that you wish to market?

does this mean that your fears are about being plagerized by some copists

{ones who cop designs from mature artists no longer starving because of recent financial successes?]

the danger of evocative art is underestimated, this is a reason I dont show my art to just anyone…

the danger of breaching the saftey of ones parameters of, of, comfort is why we surf

obviously surfing may not be your ken

although people from all walks of artistic endevor have embraced a surfboard as an eisel, you must consider the backlash effect of exposing your creativity to this format…

a brush with surfing reality may lead to an interuptive period in your mature work ethic…alltimers disease is rampant in the surf community at large…

when the surf is alltime it is common to forget about work.

the breadth of ones surfing expertise alows one to surf constantly…

quell yer fears of being unsafe…GO SURFING

not likely that many will wish to take your design from you

they have only used Lautrec posters three times in the history of surfboard manufacture at which point the suits put the respective surf shops so deeply in litagation they had to return to the underground…

ahmmm- it’s not like someone is gonna silk screen a lot of boards with any one graphic. That’s not a part of the usual manufacturing process, though some series-produced windsurfers and such did incorporate a 1 or 2 color screened logo.

While your artwork might indeed look good on a surfboard, it’s kinda unlikely that there’s a market for series production with standard graphics, etc. on ( for instance ) the whole deck of the board or something. Typically, surfboards are something the makers try fairly hard to make unique, at least in appearance. I am very much afraid that whoever you spoke to had no idea of how the surf biz works. Sorry about that.

As for safely showing examples of your work without worrying about copycats or such- see http://www.romanoskyphoto.com/html/image_catagories.html for one way to do it.

hope that’s of use

well thanks for the info anyway, im not all that famous or anything, but basically am a children’s illustrator, and I wasn’t after any money, just for someone who might like the design as their own I could have personalised someones board, was just an idea,

go leave your name at a couple o’ local shops an maybe some kid will need a teddy bear or a dragon or butterfly detail…

go surfin you will see ,… wider

…ambrose…

surfing is in your best interest

Yep, like Ambrose says - also if you did ‘lams’ on rice paper, which could be put onto the board in the manufacturing process, either printed-out copies or hand drawn individual items, there might be a market there. Worth a shot, anyhow-
