advice needed on painting pu blank

I have searched the archives and have had little success,  I have a us blanks board ready to do some airbrush work on before I laminate with R R epoxy,  some say spray with the paint and laminate,   some say seal with some kind of acrylic clear coat and then laminate.  I will be doing a simple 3 color fade from the rail inward to the stringer and then laying on a pinline under the hot coat the airbrush paint is spectra tex acrylic.  your thoughts and comments are appreciated.   thanks

I have used epoxy over acrylic paints on the blank, althought the blank was eps I wouldn’t think that matters that much.

Just make sure the paint is properly cured, water based I would leave for a day and maybe more depending on temp. You will most likely have trouble with smudging etc. if the paint hasn’t cured.

hth,

Mick.

Thanks mick,  its pretty warm here so I will make sure its good and dry before I try to lam.   thanks for response,

So far I’ve been using RR on pu blanks. I’ve also done some pretty intense paint work on the blanks.  I’ve used the acrylic sealer on some and not on others. No difference. No bleed or anything like that.  I’ve also let it dry a few days before lam.  go ahead and drop a few bucks on the sealer for piece of mind sake.  You should have no problems.  However, a pinline before the hotcoat will give you problems. If its a paint or resin pin it will bleed under the tape. search for some pinline advice before you get to that step. Cheers and good luck!

US Blanks sells both Polyurathane and EPS blanks. Resin Research sells fast and slow resins. Car guys call it a spray gun not an Air Brush. PU blank. Sand blank to 150. Light coats of paint. Let it dry between coats. This is where art and craftmanship come in...........too much paint too fast not good. I like fade jobs..........
