I have an 8-5S blank that I want to turn into an egg shape for my nephew so he can start learning to surf. Yes, I promised if he brought up his grades I would give him a board.(this is the second one I have so bribed) He is 11 and weighs about 120. I am thinking something with a nose of 16" mid point 22.5" tail 15" How does that sound and where would the wide point be???
120 lbs, beginner, 8’ length… Those dimensions sound great. I think I would move the W.P. back 2-3" from center so he can turn it easier. The side profile I see in the catalog shows nice tail rocker, though a little abrupt at the end. If you have your template up on the blank to utilize the nose rocker, consider carving a little extra tail rocker in the last 18" as well.

The idea and board sound great except it is for an 11 yr old so I might shrink the wide point down to 21" remember he has to paddle it and still have some arm left to get in the water and I agree move the templete up and add tail rocker this will leave a little extra meat under where he stands.

Yeah, I would bring the width down to about 21.5" and personally, would put wide point 6-8" past center, and drop the tail to something like 14and 5/8".

Thanks for input—I’ll reduce mid and tail dimensions accordingly, I know the kid will be stoked.
