advice on shaping a foam board

Hi, thank you in advance for any good advice. I have 5 foam blanks that range in length from 6’-2" to around 6’-8". They were used as props in a show and were painted using interior latex paint and have been in my garage for around 8 months. I would really like to try my hand at shaping them into something. I have never shaped or glassed a surfboard before, other than a ding repair. Although, I am a carpenter and craft person and have built a lot of unique things.

silly question # 1. does the foam blank become unshapeable having been in storage so long and could the latex paint be removed by sanding the blank down?

the first blank that I’m going to start with is 6’-7" long, 21" at widest point,

the tail is wide at 15", 1’ up from tail, tail is 9"

the nose is 14", 1’ down from nose and 6" at tip of nose,

3" thick

very small amount of rocker in the tail and fair amount of nose rocker.

I do realize that a blank is made with a spacific shape in mind but i’m looking for some suggestions on what I may be able to get out of this blank. I would like to keep as much volume as I can and perhaps a wide tail. I’m mostly a longboarder and kind of a big guy.

Again, I appreciate your thoughts and suggestion on how to get started.

Thank you,

David

David,

Contact me by PM, and give me some background about where you surf, your skill level, and what you want your board to do. I might be interested. Do you have the basic tools for shaping a blank, including, but not limited to shaping area, and racks?

Where are you located? It might be an idea to trade a blank of two with your local Swaylockean for an assist on the shaping. Age won’t hurt them, nor will the paint.

I’m in San Diego and I think that is a great idea, anyone interested in a couple of free blanks for some one on one mentoring?
