advice on short board for big boy

I have been reading up on
the relationship between rider weight and; board volume, size, glassing
schedule, and materials but wanted to get some input from yall with
experience.  This is the first board I am shaping for a +200 and am not
sure if this will work for him.  He is 5’9", 240, in decent shape, and a
decent surfer. He wanted something smaller that his LBs and 7’0"
thruster. Here is what I was thinking:
Length: 6’2”
Width: 22”
Thick
3”
volume: 46.17liters
(130.09beers)
2lb eps with 1/4
stringer. 6 bottom 6/6 top with 6oz deckpatch.

Do yall think that
is enough?
Is there a recommended board volume to rider weight?
Any
input would be greatly appreciated.

thanks and take it easy,

gus

if this guy is proficient, that’s a really strong setup you’ve put together there.

1.63 cubic feet…my good wave board is 1.41 cubic feet.

I was going to say add another inch or two, but he’s 5.9 so it balances out (I like mine about 6’5 and I’m 6’1)

how broad are his shoulders and how big are his feet?

if he’s under size 11, then maybe pull the width in a skosh (1/4-1/2) and take a little more foam foward (just enough to balance the volume) or take it to 3 1/16…or maybe the bumps make that all unecessary?

nice rocker numbers, too…lower tail rocker seems to help me catch waves.

That should be plenty of volume. I've got many customers of similar weight that ride less. But there's so much personal preference there, you should check with him to see what he expects. I've put up some general guidelines before - shortboard float is about .50 cu ft/100lbs, fish and hybrids .75/100 lbs, fun and mid 1.00/100 lbs, long about 1.25/100 lbs. 1 cu ft = 28.32 liters.

Looks like a copy of a Rusty Dwart. I’m 6’ and 175lbs and ride a 5’9" Dwart if that helps any with sizing.

Howzit slash,5'9" and 240, that is a hefty guy. I am 5'9" and when I was 165 lbs I thought I was over weight by 10 lbs. Aloha and now 135lbs,Kokua

Hey slashzilla!

i´m 6´3 and 200 too and I found my magic board, originally it was (still have it) a 6´3´´x 20 1/2´´x 2 3/8´´epoxy, flat deck, boxy rails, swallow tail with wings shaped by Bushman. I´ve copied that board exaclty, and sometimes I made some modifications. for example I took it to 6´4´´x 19 1/2 x 2 1/2 with some softer rails and it works great!!

Glass them standard 2x 4oz deck, and 1x 4oz and no problem. But I would recomend: 4oz/6oz deck. I shape a new board every 4 months aprox for me.

cheers!!

I’d stretch it out to 6’6

what kind of waves will he be riding?  Im 6' and 210, I made a 6 foot 22 wide 3"thick diamond tail quad with identical rocker and bottom, and it floats me just fine.  I wouldnt take it out on head high or larger waves though.  With deminsions like that Id say its more of a 6' waves and under board.

Thanks for all the input, I appreciate it.
He was stoked on the
dwart so that is what the outline was based off of.  Kokua, he is a big
guy - linebacker that huffs down spam musubi by the pound.  The board is
for smaller beach break.  Mike thanks for the #s, I saw those a while
back and forgot about em.  Looks like I might be able to tweak the foil
with 1.6 cubic feet but he will like the extra volume.  Ill let you know
how it goes.

sounds like steamroller(clinton) size.

I started at 5"
