African Universities

I moved back from Hawaii to California and I’m becoming more and more stir crazy. I’m ready for another adventure, anyone out there gone to school in Africa? My grades are not too shabby and I’m willing to sacrifice prestige for location…preferably near a diamond encrusted, frothy reef break with virgin sacrifices.

Seriously though, Any suggestions?!?

I’ve heard the University of Jeffries Bay is excellent with advanced degrees in top to bottom ripping. Mike

no but your icon is classic

I taught for three years in West Africa (Sierra Leone). I left shortly after the military took over the Gov. How many of us have walked out to our lunch break to find a machine pointed at our head?

I don’t know where in Africa you had in mind but I would say that in Salon the Universities were not quite a the same level. I can’t speak for the other countries. Remember Africa is a continent, a big one, not a country, so you cannot make any generalizations. Also, it is much more culturally diverse than here (USA). In Sierra Leone, a country the size of Arizona, there were at least a dozen different ethnic groups, each with their own languages and customs.

Do a lot of research before embarking on that journey. Of course, if you go you will learn more from just being there than at any school, anywhere.

No surf where I was.

University of Johannesberg is considered the best uni on the continent.

Would be the worst school in Australia. And it is not even close to surf.

There’s a University in Durban, probably your best bet, but a better bet would be going to as good a school as you can muster and worrying about surfing when you get out. Of course, its a personal choice kinda thing.

But if I wanted adventure, surf, and school, I’d look into Australia not Africa.

http://www.uct.ac.zaThe University of Cape Town () is a very good one with a high standard. I went to it ('87 - '92), so I can vouch for it.

Also Cape Town is a great city and has excellent waves. There’s a wide selection of spots less than an hour from the city centre. J-Bay is an 8hr drive away, and there are loads of world class breaks just a few hours in either direction of the city (such as Elands Bay to name just one https://www.wavescape.co.za/top_bar/spots/westcoast/Pages/Elands.htm).

out of lurk finally pops !

an official welcome to sways is now in order …lurkers…sheeesh … at least I know you EXIST !!

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I truly appreciate it!

I’ve looked into U of Cape Town, but Everyone I’ve met from south Africa talks about the devastating violence (especially towards the honkies)… so now I have this perception in my mind…I cannot grasp the amount of struggle there is in Africa(the continent) but the culture amazes me. I’m becoming infatuated with it. I feel like I need to be apart of it. Keep in mind I’m an anthropology major…

-And I want to get pitted in the cradle of civilization. AFRICA. …I dont want to sound disrespectful, but its true.-

But I don’t want to be a fool about it, I was just trying to find some one who has already blazed a trail for foolishly optimistic hippies like me.

South Africa does have a problem with violence and crime. It is certainly a good idea not to be naive about that, but it isn’t nearly as bad in Cape Town as it is in some other areas of the country.

I doubt Cape Town is any more dangerous than LA for example, probably much less so in fact. (I just made that up, btw, I’ve never been to LA

Anyways, good luck with where ever you decide to travel to. It sounds like a great idea for an adventure.

…and be careful taking your swiss milking maid , Olga , with you …

do they like 'Village People ’ mos in capetown , popeye / pops / paz / pascal ? [he’s the multi identity hippy, hidden beneath the father / husband/ computer guy exterior …hmmm…sounds a bit like ‘hicksy’ with his purple seated kombi , to me ?!]]
