I have a bit of a dilemma. I have been surfing for about 2 years and the current surfboard I have its a 6’1 round nose fish(from a local shaper).
Now the thing is that I’ve been surfing in Israel only and in few weeks I’m going to Hawaii and California.
So I’m a little bit confused on what board should I buy(I only can afford 1)
From the research I’ve done the best allarounders I could find are The Webber Afterburner and The CI Flyer 2.
It would really help to hear your thoughts on these 2 boards and if you can suggest any other ones.
where in HI and CA are you going; a one board quiver is a tall order. How good are you, what kind of waves do you want to ride? For the price of a new Merrick you could buy a board from a local shaper at each location for the waves you are going to surf, and then sell it when you leave. Dealing with the airlines with boards is the worst thing about surf travel.
astevens, I am not sure where you get you CI’s (I don’t ride them, if I am going to get another PU from the Santa Barbara area it will be from J7) but all my buddies who order them are spending about 700 on them. One can find a local shaper in CA to make you an amazing board for 350-550. My friends get their Hawaiian quivers at 350 a board from a very very reputable shaper.
2 years is still a beginner. I’d get a big full railed rounded pin thruster. 7-6 to 8-2 for Hawaii. Buy it there. Ship it home if it’s a beauty that you want to keep. Rent a board in California for local conditions. If you visit central California you can use any of my boards for free. Um, I mean a six pack of beer. Mike
Yes, I would say 1 board is not enough. There are boards that work in all types of waves, but they just work "okay", not well. Be realistic about the size and type of waves you'll be riding, and definatly use more than one board. CI's run about $625 or so!!! Craigslist is abetter bang for your buck if you can get two for the same price :)
Yes I know 2 years its not to long but I have been surfing on a daliy base some times eaven twice a day before and after work(I mean when there were waves).
so I feel like a 7-6 will be way to big for me. But again I’ve never surfed anywere outside of Israel so I cant really imagine what waves there will be and how Im gonna handle them.
I would actualy prefer to get a Board from a local shaper but its probebly gonna take few days till he will be able to make one and éi dont wanna waste any time out of the water.
Don’t forget Roberts, White Diamond might be fun for israel waves. But in HI, winter time, you’re gonna need a big board. Lots of water moving around out there.
when are you going to these locations? Order your board 2-2.5 months from when you will be there and it will be ready when you arrive. It shouldn’t hit your pocket too bad as you will probably just pay a deposit. Or you could even get one off the rack.
On the 30th Im gonna be landing in Oahu. The scond week we allready have a hotel booked in the waikiki area but the first week I dont know where we gonna stay.
So I woudnt mind to get some suggestions on that to
Oops, sorry. Umm, I’ve only been once, so someone else might have better recs. I got skunked when I was there, only one decent day, and I only bodysurfed some reef/bar east of pipe. Lots of rentals on the north shore, it’s a beautiful place.
