today wil painting the rails on my bonzer i was filping the blank over and the tail hit the Fnck!ng garage door brace and no the is a bout a 1/8 in deep by 1 inch long by 3/4 inch ding in my rail. any one know how to fill it is so i can finish painting before i glass? thanks in advanced
Hey Rider, I had the same problem on a blank I shaped. I found a hot tip in the archives saying to use a blow dryer on the dent. It worked pretty good. Have to be careful not to hold the heat too long in one area or it will burn the foam. It was a Clark Foam blank. Hope this helps.
normal spackle works really good. I got that trick off one of the guys at fiberglass Hawaii. just fill it and make sure it dries 100% before you paint and glass because it will delam otherwise.
spackle will work but if you are after super perfect paint job go with the blow dryer… Painted Spackle and panted foam do not look the same… my .02
I use a heat gun. Works better than a hair dryer.
Though you gotta be careful not to get too close or leave the gun in position over the dent for too long.
I let the gun warm up, and then take smooth passes going over the dent about 2 - 3 inches from it. Keep the passes quick, lik 1 -2 seconds max. Should taker about 4 passes before the dent pops back out. Lightly sand the area as it will turn a little yellow, but that is nothing to worry about.
Better than spackle cause it’s the real foam.

so heating the foanm causes it to expand and the ding disappears?
Howzit rider, When you ding the foam you crush it and the air bubbles in the foam, the heat gun reexpands the bubbles or gas in the foam and yes it will fix it. I've done it quite q few times and it always works. Aloha,Kokua
Right, it also softens the polyurethane plastic itself a skosh and allows it to ‘come back’. First found this out when using a dull sanding disc - the pressure ding I was working on had come back out some after heating up.
Used with great care, you can bring back pressure dings to some extent. But beware of overheating on a glassed board, you can have the mother of all delams real fast. Use the lowest heat setting on the heat gun and don’t exceed a temperature you can touch without burning your fingertips.
hope that’s of use
doc…
Ah, the inside of a garage… not a board friendly place.
