Air Scrubber Options

Hey Guys,

So i am in the process of finishing my new shop was wondering if anyone had any experience with installing an air scrubber in their glassing room to help eliminate the smell. New shop is close to house & our neighbors so looking to try to ease the smell of the resin. Any recommedations would be greatly appreciated. Would even consider something on the more industrial side.

use epoxy.  no smell, no problem.

Actually;  I do have a suggestion.  Try one of the fan set ups with a charcoal filter as are being used in grow rooms from Oregon to Washington and Colorado.  Pretty effective.  Lowel

I used to sell coco carbon filters to SF growers. I’d recommend exhausting the scrubber outside instead of just scrubbing / recirculating it. Or best to have both going  .they last about 6 month or so and a pre filter is helpful to prevent dust in carbon… The carbon was about $6 a pound and you needed 30 or 90 pounds which is pricey

Best to use epoxy as noted above ,plus you save money on inline fans and carbon and electricity

Use UV resin.  Keep the room sealed.  Use UV Lights to kick the resin.  Let all the stink out in one burst after the resin kicks.  Be discreet.

I currently use a mix of UV resin & regular catalized resin. Epoxy is a no go for me, i understand the benefits well, but most of my customers are looking for poly & they like the price of poly boards. When epoxy becomes more economical then i will have to take a look at using it. Right now i am thinking a carbon scrubber might be the ticket. I have an exhaust fan in my current shop, but that doesnt solve the issue of not spreading it around the neighborhood. We shall see going to give a carbon scrubber a go & see what happens.

Keep in mind that resin fumes are heavy, and sink to the floor.      So, set your vents, or pickups, down low.

How many boards a year are we talking about?  Is the OP a backyarder or in full production mode?  I worry more about shaping and sanding dust than anything.  I recently picked up a neighbor who is into very very expensive cars.  My neighborhood went from being the surfer ghetto to being upscale in a very short time.  Its been very good for my property value but makes board building a little dicey.  Thankfully my neighbor only uses his McMansion as a second home so I only have to worry about dusting his new Porsche CarreraS Convertable, new black Mercedes S550, Black Masseratti or Audi RS8 when he’s down on nice summer weekends.  I keep a close eye on the wind.  ;^}

On a more practical note, I have a guest room adjacent to my shaping/sanding/glassing/everything room, and use an ozone generator in the guest room whenever I have to use poly.  it does a good job of killing the stink.

Talked with a buddy today that has an indoor printing company that utilizes a couple of carbon scrubbers & he said they really do the trick for him. I have dust collection set up in the shaping/sanding rooms. An overhead particulate collector for the glassing, so think the addition of the scrubber should help solve most of the issues. Currently doing around 100 boards or so a year & do a lot of ding repair/resto work so the scrubber will definitely get a lot of use. Only downside is the replacement cost of the active carbon pellets as tenderloin pointed out. I have used ozone/negitive air machines in the hotel industry before & they work, but think i need something more industrial. Will let you guys know how the carbon scrubber works once i get everything setup & going.
