I’m ordering a 9’0" performance longboard from my local shaper soon. I’m really torn on the design I want on it. How much weight do solid bottoms or splashes add? Is it enough to be a consideration? My last perf. shape was a 9’2" with very little color and a gloss coat. I’m probably going sanded finish for this one. Any input would be appreciated.
But Ralph Ehni, Local Motion’s original psychomodelic airbrusher, was our glasser for a year.
Acrylic weighs less than 3 oz total, unless you go crazy with top and bottom multicolored fades.
The actual sanded finish of the blank probably accounts for more weight savings.
Argument still exists whether a sanded to 120 blank is heavier or lighter than a sanded to 220 and sealed with lam prep before actual glassing, is lighter or heavier.
I made some sub 6 lbs. 6’8"ers, x 20 and 2.75 thick, in my day. Those were the lightest boards in the late '60’s and early '70’s that the two shops here had heard of. Of course, one snapped at Davenport on a head high day, the other stress fractured in BIG OB.
If you are going for pure high performance lightweight, why not go with TINT during the lam process, to eliminate one step, that might or might not add weight?
Not dark blue or purple, just a light yellow that looks good and easy to make even.
For some reaon I though resin tint added more weight than acrylic. I’ll have to look into that further.
the only way tint adds significant weight is if you use the heavier cloth seen fairly often in the retro longboard glass jobs. otherwise, you’ve got less than an ounce of pigment (tint) added to the resin mix.
First off…is an extra ounce or two going to make you a bad surfer??
Second…you will not even notice a few extra ounces…if in fact airbrushing even adds that much.
Third…Resin tint adds no wieght. All your doing is coloring the same resin that you would use anyway.
lastly…Sounds like you are to concerned about crap that should not be worried about especially on a longboard. Yes even an HP longboard, a few extra ounces will have no effect.
It’s like adding color to Easter egg dye? You can dip them in water for clear, or you can add the little color cubes for some colors?? (Easter yesterday, remember) eerrrrr. Anyhow, you still have to laminate the board the same way with a sanded finish free lap, or a tinted cut lap job. If you spray paint the blank, what’s the weight of dried tempura paint? maybe .00000000000001 oz. or something. Board weight comes from the oz. of glass being laminated, 4oz, 6oz, 8oz, 12oz? The heavier the glass the thicker the weave, the more resin it sucks up, the stronger the board. There’s no law against going a 4oz. glass pigment job? it’s just that 4oz boards don’t last very long, and why do all the work just to destroy it in 6 months? Would you pay $700.00 for a 6’2" that will last a few months? You can still get a durable, semi light weight board with a 6/6x4 glassing schedule. Weight is also added when you gloss, but you can really get around this when you use a product like UPOL Clear Coat#1, a UPOL spray will add about 4oz of weight. So an acid splash 4/4x4 glass job with waterbased pinlines sprayed on after the hotcoat, then a UPOL gloss will be a light as any poly board you have ever picked up, you really won’t be able to tell the difference of a 4-8 oz’s…but it will fall apart just as fast as that little sanded finish chip Lost, Rusty, Al Merrick, HIC board.
One more thing, Just go with a 6, 6x4 glassing schedule.Plenty strong, plenty light for a log. If you do a tint splash with resin pins etc, the board will run about $500.00±
pick up plastic cup of paint…now if that little cup can affect ur surfing ur looking for excuses. paint weighs basically nothing. boards that i tint sometimes tend to be lighter as i have more of an even pull of the resin out of the weave. so that means there is less resin in there. tints if anything weigh less.
dont be afraid to get a portrait of ur kindergarden teacher or the fireman who saved ur life

Drew, relax, I was just asking. The point of the post was to answer the question, not justify some mythical excuse. The rest of you guys, thanks for the input!
