Airbrushing hacker

Boy did I make a mess of my second board !! I just went for it, Paint started to look it had little bubbles in some places where it got pretty wet. Tried to keep it lite but the spray wasn’t even so I maybe should have let that one dry ??? and add more ??? Any pointers… 101 on airbrush wasn’t very informative. weakest of the series. This board will be my test pilot for airbrush and glassing.

Always, super thin coats, keep the airbrush moving, never let it get shiny.

Maybe what I should have used is a tint or opaque instead of airbrush because I was spraying the whole bottom. Whats your take ?

What kind of paint DID you use.

Always use waterbased acrylics, spray thin, to get good coverage, use multi coats, rather than thick.

NEVER spray until it coats to a glossy wet finish. Means you put on TOO MUCH to soon.

I used a Tempura from Foam-EZ and I thinned with water. The Dvd 101 said do not paint the stringer ?? weakens the bond when you glass Hmmmm so I taped the stringer off. That kinda looks different when I pulled the tape. But I think airbrush looks splotchy Not like the old days when I got a color it was a tint and looked great. thanks DR

Some red and purple solids are only attainable with spray acrylics. Prolly takes a pro airbrusher, something I don’t claim to be.

Yes, tape off stringer, or air bubbles leading to delam starts with 5th hot day.

Nothing like the depth of color achieved by airbrushing direction on the blank…lots of blank prep.

sprays are not that easy if you have never used a spray gun before… I use a touch up size (Jamb Gun) gun. I have never used Tempura but I have seen good results…I hear it fades though. Your next one will be better than the first…try what LeeDD said and spray light let dry spray some more but spray at a opposite angle also good quality artist acrylic paint thinned with acrylic thinner should help…

Whoa, If you don’t have your airbrushing down, don’t attempt a tint lamination. Airbrushing is by far easier than an red or purple tint job, you might get away with a yellow tint…maybe. Seeing that this is your first board, your going to be in for all sort of little suprises. Let’s say this is the first chapter in the education process, we’ll call it Paint Saturation Part One.

Be on the look out for chapters:

12- How much catalyist on a cold day

17- Gee why are my rails gummy

21-Air bubbles and how to deal with them

54-The dry rail cronicles

32-How to foil dem old rails

and my favorite

69- How to excelerate your speed and accuracy when your resin is kicking too fast. With a foot notes on how to keep your panic’d sweat from dripping on the lamination

Success in spraying also depends on what type of spray gun you are using. For large areas, like the entire bottom you need a gun with a wide spray capability. A one quart gun will do it. Small touch-up gun is too small to get an even spray pattern. Have a blow dryer handy to dry out the paint between coats, at least two coats. Doug

Resinhead, what i’ve learned is you just have to go for it after carefull study. If I want to bother one of my friends in the business, I’ll be waiting all year. It’s looks to be sunny this morning so here goes glassing 101 first day of class. If resin kicks too fast, there’s a dumpster not too far from house. DR

Full speed ahead…dam the torpedos!

Why use water?

…you didn’t do your homework,here.Herb

I was told to thin it. Is that wrong ? Paint was thick out of the bottle. I sprayed it again, it looks better but the new color is a slightly different blend. Took the hair dryer it. Now has two full coats, but still has that splotchy airbrush look.

Thinning is mandatory for most/all paints, but not water…use Future floor Acrylic or the acrylic thinner that Kokua uses from Hawaii fiberglass.

2nd. /Poster paints aren’t the best but probably the cheapest by volume. If you plan on sticking with temper/poster paints go to a art store/school supplier and get it in a powder and mix it yourself w/ Future, now you have a acrylic waterbased paint.Herb

D. /Personnal message me (or email me) I can help you out of alot of headaches in the days ahead of you.Herb

in my experiance using all the same products as the quality panel beaters/car painters use will not give you any probs… that goes for paint/tape/thinners and sprayguns. youve probably all seen our board art at www.feraldave.com cheers dave

Doug, You were right, The gun package says “Touch-up gun” Foam EZ sells this as the only gun they have. Now that I think about it the spray pattern coming out wasn’t that big. Your heat gun tip was great Thanks. It looks ok now with two coats, a little uneven but covered. Dr

It might be a little late but watch that airbrush video again. I painted and did bodywork on cars for over 10 years and we all hate to wait. I have only painted two surfboards so far. Go slow. Practice on some old pieces of foam. Experiment with how much you thin the paint and how much air pressure you use. Before I spray a surfboard I set up a big piece of cardboard near my work area to spray on to set up the size of the fan. Don’t get too close and wait between coats.Walk away ,don’t stand there and look at it. Light coats work best. I used “Americana” brand acrylic paint that I bought at the craft store. Any paint that I thin out gets a black mark on the lid so I know next time that it’s thinned.Your next paint job is going to be Killer!!

When is it going to stop raining ? Bad weather for painting…
