airbrushing tips?

i have no problem doing single color or fades, but laying two colors next to each other almost always causes heartburn as pulling tape brings some color up with it. admittedly, i’m using cheap acrylic paint, but should i be able to pull it off with the cheap stuff? also, what’s a good check for vis of the paint so that it’s not too watery? thanks in advance.

Howzit Allen, color to color airbrushing is actually pretty easy. Tape of and spray your first color, before pulling the tape spray some clear acrylic on it then pull the tape. After the clear acrylic has dried tape off for next color and spray. When you pull the second tape off use a heat gun or hair dryer to heat the tape and it will come off without pulling any paint up. thanks! the clear acrylic makes perfect sense.

I had great success with the clear acrylic and heat gun techniques - if, I was spraying on top of the hotcoat. When spraying on foam it’s a little differenct, since the foam itself can flake off. The first time I ended up having to spray a really thick layer, and still sprayed on the hotcoat. Now, I spray my fade or solid on the foam, and do the pinlines on the hotcoat… good luck, and take your time.

A method I have used a few times on foam is to paint a strip of thin laminating resin where I planned to tape. One problem I encountered was the resin causing certain colors to appear darker. Also it was not a good idea to press the tape down hard. Good luck.
