Airbrushing

I have always done my artwork right on the foam with acrylic paints and I’ve done it the old fashion way (by hand). For the current board that I have shaped I am thinking that I want to do it faster. The design covers the entire bottom side so it will take some time to paint with brushes since I like detail. I am considering using an airbrush to do it. However, never having used one I am not certain how to do it. What paints work best in airbrushes? I know practice is the only way to learn, but any tips on techniques (fades, shadows, hard lines, small details, etc.) would be appreciated too! Thanks, Max

I think surfhungry pretty much nails it on the head…don’t forget to practice on pieces of foam to see how it looks…thin acrylics with water…good luck,

It’ll clog your gun and cause spattering. also try to get the consistancy of the paint like cream. thicker than milk and thinner than pancake batter. jc

They were very helpful. I guess I’ll just try it out and see how it goes. Max

try Golden Fluid Acrylics(not their heavybody acrylic). get em at a good art supply store.

try Golden Fluid Acrylics(not their heavybody acrylic). get em at a good > art supply store. …Do the golden fluids cost more or less? than say liquitex? Just wondering? I use Auratex once and awhile for painting on the hotcoats(bonds better than liquitex),but man is it costly!!!Thanks,Herb.

My favorite water acryilcs are Pearl. There’s a link below, but they only carry their “All Surface Acrylic” paint at their stores. They are comparable to Golden, but cost less. Click on the “Store Locations” link from the Pearl home page to find the Pearl art store location near you. http://www.pearlart.com/ http://www.pearlart.com/

they’re probabaly in the same range, maybe a little cheaper than liquitex(they’re always one of the most expensive). another good acrylic company is called Novacolor, they’re in Culver City, really high quality and cheaper than most. the thing thats cool about the Golden Fluids is they’re formulated to be a thin watery consistency but full strength pigment. most of the others seem to require a thinning with water which also dilutes color strength.
