Until they released their new version, AKU shaper was working fine. Now it appears it is not compatible with my older Mac. The software requires Java JRE 1.6 which should be an automatic update with Macs. It should come with Java 6, but Java 6 does not work on pre-Intel Macs, so instead there is an update for Java 5, but when I go to launch AKU shaper, it says the application has requested a version of JRE (1.6 +) that is not locally installed. When I search for a download it tells me that it is part of Mac auto updates. I have been trying to fix this for 2 days and I am not very computer savvy. I have two templates I need to print out. Anybody else experience this problem? Can anybody help me?
All I can tell you is that I am running 10.4 and no probs. I think Midget Farrelly, Harvaard (moderator) and Dave Verrall know the internals of OS X better than I do so they may be able to help you further. Try sending them a private message.
Basically your spurned to purchase new software, before you do… realise your ppc mac still wont accept java 6. There was a development kit for your (and my) situation. It was a download from apple jre or jdk back in 2007. That was the download that installed java 6 for developers. They have canned the download though. I may have a copy but doubt it. If you can find a developer or someone who has a copy of it please let me know.
If you upgrade you would have to buy a new machine as well as software to the best of my knowledge. Maybe we could see if aku will bend their rules for us.
Hmmm, looks like there is finally an java 1.6 update for mac os X. However, it looks like it’s not set as the default after install so you might have to fiddle around with the java settings and make sure that java 1.6 (java SE 6) is set as default. Good luck.
No news. I have been too busy this week to try to sort it out. I will probably just install AKU shaper on the wifes computer in order to print out the outlines I need. Would boardcad load a board file from Aku Shaper?
You know, with all due respect, screw you! You don’t seem to understand that even if I paid, it still wouldn’t work. I don’t have a problem with paying, but their website doesn’t scream PAY, PAY!! The free version was easily available and works for my purpose. I suppose you have paid for everything you have ever downloaded. People in glass houses, eh?
Are you saying that a paid copy of Shape 3D would work natively on a Mac? That would be way cool… but I was under the impression that Shape 3D had left Mac users out of their loop.
maybe the jedi can whip us up a good one for the sway crew. Maybe I can get boardcad up and running on this mac. btw your fish is lookin good…shaving 1/4 inch balsa from a log, makes me drool.
ok guys im trying to install boardcad on my older mac, 10.4 and having same problems as above, only difference is harvaards link to the java is for 10.5 macs.
I was unsuccessful, either way post again. For some reason the only time I had boardcad up and running (a year ago) it was painfully slow. It is good that others are finding it useful however on this powerbook g4 its usefullness was questionable. I’m not dissin, just an honest report. Anyway if it does or doesn’t work for ya, post again.
As for BoardCAD being slow, that will depend on the specs of the computer and the java implemetation on that system. I’m running it on a Dell workstation from 2001 among others. If it is slow, try turning off some things like curvature graph, center of mass calculation, etc. Also try turning of anti-aliasing. For sliding crossections (misc->crosssection interpolation) use Controlpoint interpolation as it’s by far the fastest. Hope this helps.
