Alaia Tube Riding

Here are a few pics that a customer sent me today of his mates (some well known boogers) riding some home made prone alaias in NSW. These ones were made from the 5'x18"x5/8" blank. They are super flexible, super-light and super fast! I am blown away by the waves these guys are getting. They are making a video documenting the whole shaping and surfing process. Here is a little teaser for it - http://surfinggreen.com.au/news/Alaia-Tube-Riding

The full version coming soon. Thanks to Chad from www.boompodcast.com for sending these frame grabs in -

Grant,

These are the best tube shots I have seen of guys on alaia, especially prone alaia. It is interesting to see the rail line in the tube. In the first two photos it looks like about half the board is out of the water and the tail corner/inside rail is the critical factor in holding into the wave face. This feature of prone tube riding is also reflected in the Hawaiian paipo design boards (the guitar pick shape) which are effectively all tail with little nose.

If these guys are the same guys in the trailer, they have serious tube experience. Good to see the boundaries of wooden boards being tested. I look forward to seeing more of this.

Further to my pm, do you do a 10’ x 30"?

Thanks for sharing, great video and pictures!

What size did the finished boards turn out?

I’ve been riding my alaia nonstop this summer prone at the beachbreak and even small surf feels as good as those pictures look!

Me too. When the surf is disapointing for a regular board I have had hours of fun on my alaias. No flippers though, just a grown up (questionable) kid on a piece of wood.

yes I believe they are top bodyboarders in Australia, used to charging some heavy waves. Its great to see the boogers getting into the alaias too. the small amount of the board in contact with the face shows just how alive these things are!

bob, I can cut you a blank any width in 19mm thickness up to 8ft long.

motif, im not sure what the actual dimensions of the boards are, from the video they looked around 4ft long, but i will investigate further because they obviously work!
