Allrounder

Just finished a shaping session on what I’ll call for lack of a better name an Allrounder. Here are the specks tell me what you guys think. I don’t have the rocker specs. I forgot to take them down. But I can get them if anyone is interested. The numbers I ended up with are not what I started out with but they are what flowed the best as the shaping took place. I know some shapers have formulas computerized or otherwise they use to develop specks so I’m wondering how these shape up. 7’9"x11.675"x19.75"x13.325"x2.875" with a 4.5" swallow. It’ll have a standard fin box in the center and futures on the rails. What would be the the best way to decide on fin box placement? What size fins would you surf on this board? What weight of glass would you use on a board like this if you wanted it to last without making it overly heavy? Any input will be appreciated. Good Surfin’ Rich

is this the board you were questioning tail design on? sounds pretty gunny…is it? i’d probably do a reg thruster set up and use bigger fins; GR’s or 7000’s, but a box and sides sounds ok. i’d say the box at 5-6" up and sides 15-16" up from tail. i’d go no more than a 6/4 top and 4oz bottom, but i like my boards light. i’m sure some others will have some diff. input. sounds like a fun board.

Thanks for the glassing tips, I like them. I’ll probably go this way. Why the tail patch? What’s your reason for RED-X over Future? Thanx, Rich

Hi Bruce, Wondered if youg got the email I sent you after checkin’ out your website? To answer you first question, yes, this is the board that evolved out of the thread that was titled (7’7"). GR’s??? 7000’s??? --must be future fin models-- right? I think I’ll sacrifice a little performance for strength and go double 4 on the bottom, but it aint done yet. It is a little more gunny than I thought it would be but I decided to use all of the 7’9" (A) blank and to increase the width to 19.75" When we laid the lines down with the templates it was obvious that a 14" tail was too wide. Better to let things flow and forget what the number say – the way I look at it – You gotta be like water when you shapin’. The nose was laid out at 12 but by the time every thing was faired down we ended up at 11.675", which looks perfect. A fuller nose just would have been out proportion. I very happy and am looking forward to getting it wet. We easied some nice subtle things in the bottom that look great. It think it will handle many different water conditions quite well, but not rush I want to do things right. Good Surfin, Rich P.S. Always lookin’ for that next edgey idea!

Thanks for the glassing tips, I like them. I’ll probably go this way.>>> Why the tail patch?>>> What’s your reason for RED-X over Future?>>> Thanx, Rich…The tail patch is to give the weakest part of the foam more strength. It’s also known as a stomp patch. If you use tail pads there really is no real use for a tail/stomp patch. My reasoning for RED-X is simple: strength, and ajustabilty, plus I believe in a product that is backed up by a experienced surfer/OWNER willing to visit this site and share his knowledge with us.Also it’s fast becoming “THE” removable fin system on the market, with people like “flea” and the Cortez bank riders using them, shows me that they work well. I have nothing against Future fins,it a good product, this is just a personnal choice. Why double 4oz over just good ol single 4oz, 6oz or 7.5 oz: double 4oz is lighter, thinner and tighter than 6oz in total saturated wt.,and it’s stronger than 7.5oz by 40%.Why the 4oz on top of the 6oz on the deckside? to reduce resin saturation, weight, and to provide a flatter surface with more strength.Herb.

Say Herb, You really put it on the line. I really respect you for your straightforwardness. Everything you say really makes sense. I choosing futures because It’s easier for me to make my own fins, which I do for all my boards, compatible with their system that with RED-X… that’s all. I agree with you that RED-X is a great system. Thanx again for the tips. Good Surfin’ Rich

Most of the new series of FCS fins are refinements of the first generation fins,eg.G-3=G-3000. Hey Bruce, what’s a 7000 ? is it like the old G-6s? Herb.

Hey Bruce, what’s a 7000 ? is it like the old G-6s? Herb. they’re a new one, biggest thruster set they sell. they look a touch bigger than G-6’s and look really good for bigger fun/mid size boards/bigger surfers. herb, btw, just got back a 6’8" with superchargers. got the plugs spot on this time. just need a little swell to test it now… bruce

as i was doing the lams for this board i thought it would be cool to have some kind of small logo on the bottom, maybe between the fins, that was a “spitzer supercharger” or “supercharged by spitzer” or whatever…i was gonna make one but figured i’d toss the idea to you if you open shop…

ARE SLOW,BUT …YES I am in the process of opening a shape/paint shop. As far as you making lams for your board with the above titles, that’s okay with me…or I can supply you with a mini-lam with the above stuff on it,I love to design lams or see what others can come up with…I think that’s the really fun part!..by the way I have a new Supercharger template that I think you would like,I have one in a super thin foil, that is right up you alley…set-up a meeting with me,and you can have/demo them for me.Herb.

cool, i’m picking up a board on this friday(hopefully). i’ll let you know for sure when, probably around 11-12 am. would your shop do glassing too? or painting shaped blanks?

Aloha M My Bad Magoo sorry, Hey Noodle can you work up the skinny on the specks for me if you have the time and are so inclined. Or just tell me what you think. There in the first post in the AllRounder tread. Back to the beach breaks tomorrow. It was Howlin’ offshore at trestles and slackin’ with the tide. Not much bump tides are the key right now, plenty of channels. I counted about 10 or so in a 2 mile stretch. Good Surfin’ Rich

when i was picking up/dropping off down in westminster friday the fire dept. was paying it’s annual visit. it was funny to see who high tailed it and locked up shop.

Hey Noodle, Thanx allot for getting back to me. The board shape outline does have a little bit of a through back look to it but the bottom runs flat, to vee, to flat, to single concave, to vee with double concave. The contours on the bottom are very subtle nothing very deep at all. I think this is a fairly modern concept for the bottom though I could be wrong. You old time shapers would know of course. I remember someone saying the whole board should be a sweet spot so that’s what I shot for. Kalu said, "You gotta be like water when you have the shaping tools in you hands. He’s right and he is that way. I’ll let you know how the width and rocker plug into the real thing and give you and word a run down on the rails when I get a chance to myself I don’t know how to do the number thing with them. Oh and by the way when you do give a little rundown on how you plug in your numbers in on the rails. This first set is pretty easy to figure out. But I’m a little confused and how the ones for the rails will apply. Oh yea that’s right I gonna pay bills before I go to the beach breaks. Good surfin’ Rich
