Some lifeguard agencies offer housing for their guards. This is the house to which I’ve been assigned for my 14th summer.
4 bedroom, 1.5 bath, plus an outdoor shower with hot water, 1 car garage fitted with a board rack, wetsuit drying rack, and bicycle hanging rack, about a 200 foot walk to the edge of the dune, my favorite break is right at the bottom of the stairway leading down the dune, and it’s only a 2.5 mile paddle to work. 2 men, 2 women, all veteran lifeguards. Super affordable rent split 4 ways. Just enough room in the garage to do a few small ding repairs here and there. Should be a good summer…
Those boards on my car are 14 year old Laguna 12’ paddleboards. Just went through ding repairs on those over the last couple days. I’m hoping I can go at least a week or two before the surfboards start showing up.
I’m year round lifeguard on the Big Island, live too close to the Pacific, just couldn’t pass up the half acre with ponds surrounding the old beach cottage.

It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it. Next you’ll be telling us that they force you to take a paycheck, too :->
There are tradeoffs, however. Ya see, other lifeguards from the same organisation tend to stop by on their days off, to leave their cars in the driveway and surf that particular break.
Plus certain other quasi-privileged characters* like…
doc…
*though I have been known to bring quality beer and snackies… like Magic Hat and calimari and a grill. Fair is fair, after all… that’s how one gets quasi-privileged.
i would be interested to know how many guards are on swaylocks. This should be my first summer on the beach, I don’t need housing i got my own beach house half a block from the beach.
The beach dept. doesn’t realize what an asset my family is to them, over the years we have pulled out as many people as they have. now I am getting paid for it.
Nice digs, but 14 summers? You must be a teacher or a professional student. I lived that life in NJ and CA for years, but worked the winters in Australia and Hawaii. Great life but I gave it up about 12 years ago. Got to say I think about it almost every day and hope my kids get the chance to do the same.
