An agave film clip ...for miguelaragao , and other fans of agave !

hiya , "Migs " !

how have you been , mate ??

  I'm posting

this  ,    [ just 'click' on the left hand side picture , with the guy carrying the agave stalks up the hill ]

because my brother Simon "tagged" me with this , on my 'Facebook ' "wall" / "page" , today ...

..... I just thought you , and others here , "might" be interested ??

Is it portugese he is speaking , and a portugese point which he is surfing , I wonder ? [or maybe , ?spanish?]

...enjoy !

 cheers mate !

  ben

oh ...

when I read the english ['more'] , it said 'rio de janeiro , brazil' ...

  so ...

I guess it IS portugese he is speaking , then  !  [at least YOU won't be needing to read the subtitles hey , 'Migs' ! ]

  cheers

  ben

.....and , yes , by the way ...

I  HEARTILY  recommend using FULL PROTECTIVE GEAR ...

.... from the top of the head , the eyes , the throat , the hands  [ think about wearing ear plugs and / or industrial headphones too, working on band saws , etc] .... to the bottom of your feet , when working with agave .

....I just thought I needed to mention that , for the people who , like me , may have been a bit concerned for the guy's present and future health , and safety ?! Despite his "the surfboard industry materials are so toxic " comment , I have found , from my one agave cultivating and fin making adventure , that agave has its own issues / risks to work with , like anything , if we don't take the neccessary precautions .

Beautiful looking end products , like miguel's and barry snyder's  and gary linden's boards , are the rewards , though !

  cheers !

Ha - totally didn’t even see this thread when I started mine… I blame the resin fumes

This is my short acting career. HAHA!

be careful. I’ve heard agave is toxic.

Full respirators are in order when milling/shaping.

Hello, thank for sharing the video…you have inspired me to try to shape my first surfboard after years of research…Yes, I confess, I have read too many things, and based on my budget I will try to do the cheapest=

an agave surfboard. Well, I have cut the agaves, like 20, some of them looking dry and strong, some not…I have choseen the best ones…my neighbor have a wood shop right in front my house, so he will help me to cut them down and get the strips…I have found my template, a 5’5’’ fish kneeboard ffrom Steve Lis, a board that I wanted to try before…everything is almost in the way to start this monday…I have few questions to ask to the agave builders:

1.- Can I use normal white glue for wood to glue up the strips togheter?

2.-after shaping, should I use any wood coating to seal the agave surface before glassing, I mean, otherwise the agave will suck resing making very heavy the board?

3.-I will use a block plane to shape it, because my limitate budget, do you use a surform on agave blanks, they behave similar than polyurethane? the agave is soft, nope? I mean, I can use dragon skin for the rails? or just sand paper?

ok…I guess that I will learn by trial and error, but any advise will be appreciated!

hello people! rasta swaylocks I and I, Jah agavesurfboard bless!

jejeje, it is just to be on a regeea mood!

well, here we go, I just want to share in this opportunity my first ongoing agave project with some pictures!

I planning to shape a 5'5'' Steve Lis Fish that I have found somewhere in a good shaping book somewhere here in this forum (I really dont remember where), but the book have all the measurements (rocker, width, outline, thickness, etc) including the fins! For me will be a real challenge, it is my first shaping after years of research!..the book is amazing, it is from the 70's I guess, make me feel like shaping in this time, everything have to be done like in the old days (great learning opportunity for me!)

I have chop the agaves, like 15, some of them good, others not, but after asked Miguel and some people here I guess that im almost ready to draw up the rocker template and cut off the agave stripes.

well people, I will keep you update for those who want to know about my little project…have been a lot of work and patience (even just for start), so many things to consider. For example, my neighbour is carpenter, but his time is very little, so to cut down the agaves in stripes have been almost a week! now im remaking the rocker template more accurate, and I have to wait more than 1 day to use the tools in the shop! well, anyway, Im doing a PhD, so my time is limitated too…

thanks all the people here, miguel, barry, warrior1515, etc!

and yes, im using protective mask, gloves, long sleeve, jeans, etc!
