And now: D.I.Y MAKING PLASTIC / MODERN FINS

Hi

so far the ply i have managed to find locally is external 5 layer ply that’s warped.

What else can i fashion keels out of, perspex?

Cheers

Wal

wal2,

Any kind of high quality ply or wood will do. Check cabinet builders and ask if you can go through their scrap pile.Mike

Are there no builders merchants near you? Get a sheet of 12mm or 18mm WBP (weather/water, boil proof) exterior ply. This will cost you about £30 for a 8ft by 4ft sheet and will be stored inside flat in a huge stack so shouldn’t be warped. Used to come in Gaboon with a light coloured skin and Far Eastern with a dark skin. It is much cheaper than Marine ply and better than Shuttering ply and other grades which have quite a lot of non structural ‘chod’ on the inside. or are warped and knotty. Worth checking out local joinery places and boatyards as quite often they will be sufficiently interested in what your doing to let you have offcuts. Off course if you can afford Marine ply that will be very good.

As an alternative you may have a plastic supplier near you which will have thin sheets 2mm,3mm, 6 mm etc of a smooth faced PVC with a foamed core. These come in diff coloures and are lightweight and would be nice to glue up to the required thicknes and glass with epoxy.I think sign writers use this sheet a lot.

Also if you have a refuse tip of a charity recycing depot it can be worth asking them to keep back some pre chipboard wardrobes as they are often backed with thin but good ply that you can glue to the required thickness. This type of furniture which reminds me of student digs 20 years ago usually gets put in the skip these days.

Get some balsa from local hobby shop or on line, glue up and foil that and glass?

hi, i have just finished shaping some wood keels ,what i used just for a different effect was hardwood floor tiles , i bought a pack of 6 tiles for £3 something and cut out the shape from the middle of two tiles, i will post some pics when i can ,pete

if you’re anywhere near newcastle, i think Doves carries good ply for fins. Just nicked some from work for just that purpose…

Cheers folks.

I’ll have a search about.

Roy, you know that the reason that you DIY, is so you can do it your own way.

If someone would care to post how to make fibreglass fins that would also be very much appreciated
