Announcing BoardCAD v1.0

Boardcad website gone down? I cannot get through. Any advice?

Running well on Mac 10.4.11 - can only use Java 5 - printing stringer profiles for glue ups from APS files.

Yipppeeeee!

Well I managed to get in working on Windows, kind of. From what I could see of it, it was nice but it keeps crashing almost everytime I use 3D.

Hi Deanbo,

if you get problems with boardCAD crashing with 3D, the very first thing you should try is updating your graphics drivers. Driver problems or compatibility problems between the 3D package we’re using and your drivers will typically result in the app crashing when navigating in the 3D view. If the problems happens during the conversion to 3D, please send me the .brd files that caused the problem.

regards,

Håvard

Spent about 25 minutes playing with ver1.0. Very cool.

2 issues:

  1. Failed to import a couple of .brd files that I’ve already cut from. Error is something about “failure to translate end point” I’m guessing this is something to do with the definition of rail or apex points in the .brd file.

Wondering if there is a rule I should follow.

I can change the control point designation in S3D to match the Boardcad requirements.

  1. 3d model conversion to nurbs crashed out (running online). Could just be my system (or maybe I was too impatient)

Nice clean interface and the underlying algorithms seem to do a good job of interpolation.

Anyone know if you can go from STEP to a KKL machine?

Darn I haven’t done a board in weeks - I feel the itch coming on.

Is there any chance that you can change the Java version to 1.4+ or 1.5+ not 1.6+ in the JNLP or JAR descriptors or whatever they are? I’ve been playing around with the JNLP file and I think this may be the problem for me on OS X.

Hey Haarvard this is really cool!! This is what I’ve been waiting for. The export feature work flawlessly. Many Thanks!!

Hi Atomized

That board looks good. Did you post process in your high end 3d modeler? which one do you use by the way?

Give us a few tips on that if you can… how could you re-design the profile of the board for example in a similar way to BC.

Nice paint work!

Modeled the board in AKU. Opened the .brd file in BoardCAD. Converted to 3d in BC. Exported as .stl. Open stl file in 3d app (Just about any 3d app now opens stl or dxf files). Added texture and some lights. Set up camera to orbit around board, aimed at axis of board so that it takes a picture every 10 degrees. Saved it as a movie clip.

What a great program! This is a big improvement from the others! It booted up in Ubuntu with no drama at all. Excellent Work!

Still not working for me on os 10.4 tiger…

this is what the console gives me:

Java Web Start Error:

The application has requested a version of the JRE (version 1.6.0+) that currently is not locally installed. Java Web Start is unable to automatically download and install the requested version. This JRE must be installed manually.

The above pretty much explains it. It requires java 6 which is still not available on OS X. We’re working to find a soultion that will work out of the box on OS X with Java 5.

The program currently requires Java 1.6 and 10.4 only has 1.5. Furthermore I doubt if 1.6 is coming to Tiger users. For Leopard users you would have to download the developer preview from Apple and then try it. I’m beginning to come to the conclusion that Apples’ support for Java is pretty much crap.

Can’t see a way of moving/deleting the nose and tail control points… am I missing something?

Making a fish tail seems to involve adding a control point aft of the tail… but then the board dimensions do not reflect the (new) true length.

when everyone goes to the boardcad page to download the program there is 2 options, on the left hand side column there is a list titled Usage

option 1 to get it running is RUN BOARDCAD. this uses java webstart and seems to work on any of my macs with osx tiger. this version is fine for most of you that can work online.

option 2 is what most of you have downloaded and are struggling with this is on the download list called BOARDCAD, this version is less complete and has more compatabilty problems at the moment as its being setup with more options for blank choice & machine settings etc.

i hope that helps some of you to get it working, cheers Dave

I’ve tried both options with negative results…

Too bad, cos the program looks really nice and I’d love to see it working.

Same. Anyone had any success with Leopard?

Hello there Haavard,

PM’d you a couple of days ago. You should find another PM in your inbox. Please let me know if you didn’t get it.

Sorry for the problems with Mac. If it is a problem with Java 1.6, this might help:

if not our mac-developer will soon be back from his trip to Maui and should be able so solve these problems.

Cheers,

Jonas
