I could hardly believe it when my wife suggested, “Why don’t you build two boards this year?”
Really? So here’s number 2.
It was going to be a 6-10 semigun but the rocker and foil of the blank were kind of messed up. The foil’s thickest point was way back and the nose curved up really thin. I basically couldn’t get the board I wanted out of the blank. I was thinking of gluing the rocker bed onto the blank and recutting it. Instead, as one friend commented, “This is Southern California. Why do you need a semi gun?”
So I took the blank at the thickest point of the foil and measured equal distances to the nose and tail and came up with a 5’-8". OK. I had just seen two guys tearing it up at my local beach on biscuits. I also had some old glass ons from one of my favorite boards (ironically, a 6-10 semi gun that had delammed). So here’s what I came up with.
I’m wondering if it’s too curvy and how much rocker to put in? With compsand construction, rocker is my achilles heel. If I want more than 3" on this board I have to bend it in.
Funky foil in the blank.
Notice how my board building operation has spilled over into my daughter’s room. If my wife saw this she’d probably be pissed off.
The magic fins. I love how the clear gives off rainbow colors in the light.
The rocker. 2" in the tail and 3" in the nose. I’m thinking to put it on the bed for 5" of nose rocker figuring it will spring back 1" giving me 4".
Board #2 moving right along. Bottom skin is bagged on. This time the rocker is on the money. Rails on. Was hesitant about the concave deck…figured I might need all the foam I can get on such a short board (5’-7"). But curiousity got the better of me. I thought I’d make it subtle- I put in 1/8" and I couldn’t even feel it. No sense in that I figured. So I went to town and scooped it out, going more by feel than by numbers or even sight. The ridge looks more extreme than it feels.
Deck skin goes on this weekend. Meanwhile board #1 is done and I will post some photos tommorow.
Deanbo-I get my blanks from Segway Composites. As much as I’d like to I have no room to store large blocks of eps.
Well, I finally put the calipers on the board and am a bit worried. In the middle I get 1-7/8". So with 1/8" skin I’ll have 2", pretty damn thin. At the apex of the rail, with the most meat 2-1/8" so it’ll be 2-1/4". So, all in all this will be the shortest, thinnest board I’ve ever ridden.
