another 30th birthday board!

ok guys, some of you may remember me posting the board i made for my mate last november…

well ive recently finished another for my girlfriends 30th!

apologies for not posting whilst i made it but it had to be kept top secret for obvious reasons!

she was so surprised and so over the moon! the joy on her face made the 6 weeks of evenings worth it!

it hasnt been in the water yet but a ride report and photos of the lucky lady with her 30th hollow wooden will follow!

thanks to all of you posters out there who have fed my inspiration and made me test my practical skills working in your shadows. i owe so much to you all!

so sit back and pat yourselves on the back while you scan through the build.

thanks

reminds me of a kitty hawk model i built once nice work… aloha…

unfortunatly i didnt get chance to take photos of the skins before i stuck them on the frame but they were glassed with 4oz glass and resin research. the skins are european ash and walnut.

blocks were glued in place for fin box and leash plug supports.

rails are 1.5mm ply and 1.5mm cork bonded with pva and miles of masking tape!

the walnut stripes on the deck are irregularly spaced. this was a f&*k up but as a fellow techie said… only allah makes things perfect! an old saying by persian rug makers.

the nose and tail were lopped of in order to glue on the walnut and purpleheart blocks. for this job i used my festool plunge saw with guide rail and rail clamps, took about 1minute to do either end, absolutly perfect cut and so so flat. check their saw out if you do many of these!

i then shaped the rails etc and added a little purpleheart veneer near the tail.

it was then glassed 4oz bottom double 4oz top with resin research fast. all i can say is i love the stuff and will probably only go back to polyester now and again for novelty value!

i then routed and fitted a single box, walnut and purpleheart leash plug and drilled for a brass screwed vent. what a great feeling it was as i drilled through and it hissed! watertight!!!

photos of leashplug to follow.

cheers privateer, do u have any photos?

she really better be awesome to do all that work.

she sure is! met her surfing a year ago on sun, hopefully we can take it out for its first surf on our anniversary.

That gives new meaning to, “A Labor of Love”!

She must be as beautiful as the board…

The ketchup bottle stand is classic…burgers and boards…

VERY NICE!

Pete

cheers pete… was wondering who would be the first to comment on the ketchup bottle! my flat mate was out so had to improvise.

Surfingdog, that’s top work there. Lovely wood you’ve used, where do you order from?Wish I had some university facilities to use, my garage has turned into a dumping ground for everything my wife and son can’t find a place for anywhere else.

Oh, my birthdays at the end of January…

cheers jase!

we get our wood from either g e robinsons or trafford timber centre and buying through uni makes it cheaper.

i dont have a finished weight for it as i dont have any scales but need to get some so i can keep an eye on it for leaks.

its not been surfed yet as we havent had any decent swell for a while, fingers crossed we’ll be at hells mouth this weekend tho if not it will be devon for beginning of may… long weekend.

B_E_A_UTIFUL!

cheers shacked!

That looks like an absolute nightmare to put together. Nice looking board too.
