another fin placement question...

how far from the tail should a fin box be placed on a 6’4" single fin egg? thanks in advance. sol

I have a fat, round, single-fin, 6’6" egg. The fin box on that board is 6.5" up from the tail. I’ve seen a narrower 6’2" egg with the box at 4.5" from the tail. I think somewhere around 6" should be cool for your board. You can move it up or down depending if you like your boards skatey or drivey. Use the long fin box and experiment with fin placement to get the feel you want.

Does it apply or because of the symetrical base it’s a whole different animal.

I’ve got a 6 foot single fin egg what happens if you put superchargers on > a single fin. Does it apply or because of the symetrical base it’s a whole > different animal. …I have put 2 very, very small chargers on each side of the single fin with good results not GREAT results ,but good results…for the most part it is a whole different animal, especially when you are talking about a box fin that can be positioned out of the drafting ranges. You could however try an updated version of the Fury fin,Herb.

how far from the tail should a fin box be placed on a 6’4" single fin > egg? thanks in advance.>>> sol placement depends on a variety of factors such as rocker, bottom shape, rail shape, do you surf of the tail or from middle of board.etc.All of my boards are single fin, with boxes placed at either 9 or 10" up from tail, with fin placement , as measured to the trailing edge of fin, anywhere from 12.25" up to 14.25" which may sound rather extreme but that,s what works for the type of boards I ride and my style of riding.Try a long box so you can start the fin out around 7" thenspend a session or two moving it up to 12-13" and see what happens.Have fun!

While surfing the web for surfboard design info about eight months ago I came across an ad and information re a “stick-on” set of “mini” fins shaped like the small series of dorsal fins on a tuna. The developer called this system the multi-vortex generator system, and claimed that these fins (actually one stick-on “line” of two or three fins) greatly enhanced the speed and maneuverability of his single fin surfboard. You can see a picture of them at www.gosurfgear.com. (Look on the left frame for the multi-vortex generator link.) At the time I was able to navigate to a screen where the developer gave some explanation of this system (along with a lot of hype as to why it was so revolutionary.) I don’t know anyone who has tried them, nor do I have any direct experience with them. I believe the design is based, at least in part, on a series of fins which can be placed on an airplane wing (foil). The purpose of these fins is to increase operational efficiency of the foil primarily in the fuel consumption and stability area of aircraft ops. This idea does indeed work, but to what degree I do not know. I do know that one does not see a lot of aircraft with these mvg-type fins installed on the airfoil.
