another wood fin tip...

loved the wood fin production post…

just though i add a trick that i use for center fins that really helps keep the cloth from laying down too much when only doing 1 fin, (Bert solved the problem by lining his center fins up in a row). anyhow i take a scrap piece of 1/8 ply or doorskin and then trace the foiled wood fin. then cut out the pattern about 1" larger all the way around. next i set the wood fin and cut doorskin onto my waxed surface and fiddle around with tiny shims under the tip of the fin etc, then i add 3 layers of 6oz over the whole thing let it dry, flip it add the rope and another 3layers of 6oz…

the photos i have attached are of a set of keel fins that are ready to cut free…

i also added some photos of my on the fly fin grinding clamp…

jjp,

I wish you didn’t show us those keel fins. Now I’ll have to try and make a set with the little cut-aways. Dam! I guess I’ll have to make a board for them, too. Mike

i got a set of those canard quads for the board, but when it came time to buy the Future’s instulation jig i couldn’t pull the trigger… so i came up with those keel fins by putting the canard quads back together. kinda a full circle evolution. glassed the fins on last night at midnight with the full moon for extra voodo power.

jjp,

Be sure to let us know how it all works. Mike
