Any Hawaiians that can help?

Hawaiians

Hi I’m scratching my head over this one and hoping someone can help.

I’m restoring an old board that I found washed up on the beach and want to do a full cloth inlay on the deck.

I’ve been trying to get hold of some Hawaiian print cotton to do a full-length inlay on the deck with matching fins.

I’ve searched the net and found this company: http://www.fmart.com/

I’ve even found the perfect fabric:

Been in touch with them and the only problem is that the minimum quantity for international orders is 20 yards. Now I’m not sure on the conversion but I think 1 yard = 36”? (Is this correct?) So I think only really need 2 or 3 yards.

I’ve asked nicely if they will ship less but so far no response.

There seems to be a few branches in H.A so I was hoping someone could help me out by either pick me up a few yards or I’ll get it delivered then send it on to me. I’ll pay for the fabric and the shipping its just the quantity that’s making it too pricey.

Or If anyone knows a place that will sell similar fabrics internationally, in smaller quantities please pass on the details.

Thanks

Why don’t you just buy a hawaiian shirt and use the fabric?. They sell them in the UK. Try a surfshop or second hand store.

I am not hawaiian,I just live here.

Already checked the local fabric stores

I intend to do a full deck in lay on a 6’ twinny, so a shirts going to come up a bit on the small side, guess I could try high and mighty.

woody, have you tried seabase, last time i looked they had hawaiian fabric but not sure on the sizes

You can also use silk, or silk/cotton mix, as well as cotton, as you noted. Think about the larger order. You’ll have plenty for other boards, as well as a scarce commodity in your area. Do a series of boards with the cloth, it will set them apart from other boards in your area.

Heeeeeey Wood-lump

get yourself the whole roll, make the rest up into seat covers for VeeDub t4s and sell them for £80.00 a pop to the guys in and around Braunton, maybe even give Lawrence a bell at TotallyT4 see if he’s interested in a load for his customers. There’s a T4 forum aswell where folk are always asking where to get Hawaian print seat covers, you could corner that market, dude. Just need to get a sewing machine and a chick to stitch em (just added that to irritate my wife who’s reading what I write)

Love the print mate!

Peace!

check out the thread, (Still searching for shapers) in the industry talk section, they`ll print whatever you want onto a light weight fleece. They sent me some samples through realy nice stuff…

I think i have the web address somewhere all the prices are on there, ill check and post.

Aloha Woody,

If larry’s fabric source doesn’t work out there is a discount fabric wharehouse here in Hilo. I could score you 3 yards? Mail it to you? Maybe we could barter something? Do you have an extra 3 tab jig set for FCS 3 tab twin fin instal? I need one of those. Let me know you could send some cash also.

To the Braddahs Swaylockians - love everyboard as it was the first!

FabricMart’s all over the place here

don’t know if they are the cheapest though

If I have the time I’ll check it out for you

this is All-Over Hawaiian Print Fabric

CA1256 - 100% Cotton Fabric

right?

The swapmeet is probably half the price.

I usually just go up the street to walmart since they have a good craft section and Ben Franklin is another choice for material.

I take it you’re deadset on this design right?

Not very Hawaiian in my opinion

compared to Sig Zane http://www.sigzane.com or others who print their own patterns like my calabash cousin Nake’u Awai.

Sig being an avid surfer himself on the big island is starting to design surfboards with his prints here on oahu…

Dude,

I just put in “hawaiian fabric” search on EBAY and there were HUNDREDS of selections with the yardage you need. How hard did you research this again?

you are welcome.

“Not very Hawaiian in my opinion”

Yeah Woody, you may wish to reconsider your fabric choice if you wanna go Hawaiian, no offense but that is the stuff you usually see on tourists or for sale in the “import shops”. You may have a specific reason for it though. It might be better than nothing anyway.

imho I agree with Ono

or… there’s Balsa’s brilliant use of fabric as a possible direction for you

Howzit woody, The Wal-marts in Hawaii have lots of aloha cloth in the fabric depts. Usually runs around $4 a yard. If you go to their website and put in a Hawaii postal code you may be able to check them out, then copy and paste the web page on Sways and one of us could pick it up and send to you. It might work.Aloha,Kokua

Thank you very much for all the replies.

I’m not 100% set on that design, but the colours work with the pigment (dark green) I will be using on the bottom I was also thinking maybe dark purple, also I wanted something a little different than the standard hibiscus template/outline that we can get here from seabase.

Unfortunately my home pc has died so I’m stuck using the one in the office, which blocks a lot of content, internet auctions like e-bay being one of them.

Thanks for all the suggestions I’ll do some more research, go to an internet café and check out e-bay and the other site.

Thanks again

keep us posted on your inlays!

I am curious how to go about it, I have some real nice african art fabrics that I would love to inlay.

Sorry for the hijack but would love to hear more about inlays and if there are any issues with epoxies? I have done one inlay with a surfboard specific “fleece” which was an experience I would rather forget…

hey dave check out my recent thread, first board order woohoo! i did fabric inlays with epoxy and it worked great, feel free to ask any questions

Shot!

I see that the pinline is the critical area… Anhy tricks to avoid strands of fabric from getting away or do you trim them while wet after lamination? Strikes me with epoxy you have a horrible tendancy of getting bubbles when fidgeting with the strands. I have been considering vacuum with peelply but wanna see what the other guys are getting up to.

Nice board btw.

Think I;ve got this nailed now. I had the search engine looking for product available in the UK, it’s ment to take into account international shipping, but apparently it only works if certain payment programs are used, so I widened the sear and have found loads of companys.

I’m down in newquay at the weekend so will check seabase to see what designes they have in stock but it seems cheaper to import the stuff my self and cut out the middle man.
