any last mintue tips for epoxy swirl

hey resinhead i agree with you 100%. i have only done 1 poly swirl mixed in bucket  and this epoxy which i poured in three color seperatly over the blank.

i would not try pouring epoxy into a bucket and pouring over blank for a swirl. i would only do it with poly as epoxy muds up real easy and the detail is no where as nice as poly.

on this board i tryed to get resin to kick fast to stop muding. I warmed up resin in hot water before starting and had my shaping bay at 27 deg cel. it when of so so fast i was running to get it all out. i was glad i had no rails to wrap. i only used 500ml to swril and 75mls of clear after it set up abit

cheers antony

Why can’t epoxy do that?

From the little swirls I’ve done the lines can be pretty thin. I’ve not done it with that much different colors though, I try to limit myself to 3 colors. I totally agree that it can be ridiculous expensive…

The streaks do not stay as crisp and vibrant with epoxy. I can’t explain why, but it has to do with the physical properties of the two materials. I do lot’s of epoxy swirls “correctly” and you just don’t get the same results as poly. Still… it’s personal preference as to what looks good and what does not. Epoxy swirls are like ugly girls with hot bodies… nice from far, but far from nice.

I like ugly girls… and five color swirls.

The main thing is:  Epoxy will not allow itself to be forced into the glass / foam....It need to soak in. if you move it around like poly, (which loved to be manhandled) it will froth and foam. Epoxys  viscocity is like used SAE 90 weight gear oil. While poly is like fresh 10 W 30. Epoxy is way more sticky than poly. Once it's in place..it doesn't like to move.

With that said and the advent of KK and CE the color work is getting much better than when guys were using West System or SB products.

Howzit resinhead, Has anybody tried doing them on th foam? I know I iike the way poly ones on foam look and started doing themon foam after 40 years of doing them in the lamination. Mark Angell did one for a customer in my shop and I was sold on th idea, plus it seals the foam.Aloha,Kokua

For what it’s worth, I don’t like the look of poly swirls either if you get too close. As with the above poly swirl you start seeing the weave if you get too close, especially on LBs with heavy glass with coarse weaves. Kina like a hot chick with bad skin…

Anyone done swirls with Resin X? Wonder if that is more like poly or epoxy (or something completely different).

That’s the other problem with Epoxy color work… 9 times out of 10 you’re lamination is 6oz, so you clearly see the weave, especially on tints, and especially with darker colors, and especially if you get the right glass/resin ratio. It’s like looking at pointillism art… tiny dots of color that look solid from a few feet away.

Kokua… Deadshaper’s been doing some foam staining with great results - been experimenting with different materials and techniques. He’d be a good one to ask.

slight change in technique and a willingness to spill some on the the floor…epoxy swirls can be as good as any poly.

Of course, I’m biased towards a certain brand of epoxy.

hey Kokua

howsit, could you elaborate on this foam staining process?,please

I just gotta know

Howzit kensurf, It is a some what different technique and I have been trying to figure out how to explain it but it is so much easier to see it done. Let me work on writing up the technique and then I will post the process. Aloha,Kokua

Ken… I’ve done it with paint - mostly abstract type stuff… splashes and streaky type patterns. You only use a tiny bit of paint and squeegee it on.

Deadshaper knows a few tricks, too. Last I heard from him, he’s getting it down.
