I may have to move to the Texas coast and was wondering if there was any hope to continue surfing…or should I sell the boards and take up fishing? If there is hope, are there any shapers in Texas to feed my habit?
Texas has waves good little waves from Corpus Christi to the Mex border. I spent two years in Corpus and had some great days of surf. It’s warm water, more sharks then any place i’ve ever surfed. The Gulf is a fish tank so grab your poles too. Plus you can drive to mex and be surfing the west coast in a long day. Best waves Sept thru spring summers can be real flat and “HOT”. There are some good shapers in CC and in Galveston Look for Bob Martin Master shaper. In 88 he shaped me my first real HP longboard. He had a Magic Model by Steve Walden so he copied it for me. Most of the waves in CC are wind swell because the trade winds blow SE so it blows hard onshore. Bob Hall Pier is the largest Peir in the gulf almost as big as HB Pier so you have wind protection and big sand bars on both sides of the Pier. The city of Corpus built a surfing pier just n of Bob Hall pier it about 150 feet long but still traps sand fun waves. just north of the surfing pier is fish pass two small jettys for small fishing boats great place for waves when the wind is blowing. South of Bob Hall Pier 60 miles down the beach is Mansfield Pass two huge jettys waves on both sides of the both Jettys. You need a 4x4 it’s always alot of fun if you get stuck so make the run with another 4x4. So I hope that helps take your board and leave your wetsuites behind. It only gets cold for about two months a year mid winter. You all have fun now you hear!!! I’ve done most of the Texas coast accessable without 4x4 trucks, and last surf trip was in very late 1980’s - which means I don’t know what the people/crowd situation might be now. Definitely get a good longboard and maybe some kind of fish or shorter board. I used to tell people I would get a 8-8’6" softboard if I lived there, but the sun and heat are brutal on that material so now I’d go with a regular board. The local guys wherever you are going can clue you in. I lucked into one great day down on South Padre Island and many days the length of the coast we might call junk in California except for conditions that seemed pretty much tropical and were quite empty. Nothing but a good time. When Texans talk about heat they mean it. My first trip to Texas was in late August as some kind of troipcal storm was camped out over the Houston/Galveston area. I was getting a local style board at a surf shop in Galveston (oddly it had a Jacobs label) and the guys were happy. Despite pouring rain and probably 90 degree temperatures there was surf. I went to one of the jetties, by the hotel I think, and it was pouring rain, hot and humid. I put tropical wax on the board and paddled out into blown out storm chop, and hadn’t been out 10 minutes and the tropical wax was wiping off. Water temp 87 degrees! If you are going to be there, keep surfing. Take the fishing poles too, though. And check Tom Sternes link. Nels http://www.thirdcoastsurf.com
What part of Texas will you possibly be moving to? I live around the Galveston area. We mostly get small windswell, but it can get really good with cold fronts & tropical storms. Definately bring your longboard and fish. The surfers here are really friendly, so if you come just ask them for information and I’m sure they will help you out. There are also plenty of shapers around.
Bring your boards AND fishing gear. Tom Sterne>>> I may have to move to the Texas coast and was wondering if there was any > hope to continue surfing…or should I sell the boards and take up > fishing? If there is hope, are there any shapers in Texas to feed my > habit? http://www.thirdcoastsurf.com
Sounds like there is hope! I’ll keep the longboards and make the best of it. thanks.
Just got back from bali, i was hanging out with a texan. he was stoked with onshore kuta so that might say something about the waves in texas. mick from oz
