I fancy myself a good shortboarder when the surf is overhead to double overhead. I am all over the wave and have a blast (six to twelve foot faces). But in the smaller surf (most of the time here in Carlsbad) I find myself kooking out, especially if the surf is mushy. I see other guys ripping but I can’t seem to generate a lot of speed unless the wave is super hollow or much larger than me. I think it’s my stick. Any suggestions on measurements for a small wave shortboard that can really get me ripping? I already have a bunch of other longboards, retros, etc., but I want a modern tri-fin that can get the job done, something in the 6,6 range. I am mostly curious about flat bottom rocker, especially through the middle. I think that has a LOT to do with speed in mushy surf. Am I right? Also, I want it to be ultralight. That’s a must. The width of a board is critical too, correct? I am 6 foot, 195-200 pounds, and am in good paddling condition. I only need it to ride 3-5 foot surf, very common here. Anything bigger or smaller and I’m covered with other boards that are perfect. Thanks.
