…on how this may ride , with these sort of dimensions ?
[I’d be thinking of using this in beachbreak in the head high to a foot [maybe two?] overhead range, maximum ]
thanks !

Nice looking shape Chip, but looking at your latest photos you are a back foot rider and knowing the type of waves we have here I’d be looking at putting in a bit more width behind centre for easier takeoffs and extra drive off your bottom turns.
(Thank goodness you haven’t mentioned the fin setup, don’t anybody get him started… hehehehe)
Hey Ben,
looks a little like the “Screwdriver” on the “Hot Buttered” website (it is 6’3" x 20" x 2 3/4").
Cheers
Rohan
(Thank goodness you haven’t mentioned the fin setup, don’t anybody get him started… hehehehe)
actually , I was leaving that open for comment , too …
My rationale with this outline was that , actually , I would move forward on the board when riding , and have to squat and widen my stance , as I do on my single fin stubbie , to help drive the board . Then , I would probably be in a better trim / speed position to make waves like the one I posted myself not quite inside of .
I figure I can go narrower than 19" in the width too, but , hey …
…it’s YOUR feedback and comments I would welcome , everyone …I’ve typed enough for now …
cheers !
ben
Chip… Build it, and you will have fun
Ben.
um…thanks ben …
can you be a bit more specific , pleaese ? [eg: what kind of fun ?]
No, seriously , what kind of bottom , fin setup[s] and positions would YOU go for , if you made one of these , please ?
cheers !
ben
I found that the stinger tail favored frontfooted surfers, so I’d chop it off at the wing myself.
19 if you want quick and responsive for small waves, 21 if you want to limit yourself to slower, even smaller waves.
Hey Chip,
Doesn’t look too disimilar to this.
When get around to giving the $20 airbrush a go, I’ll let you know if it’s worth having a
go at the spray job as well.
Stevo
Have to agree with LeeDD about the stinger, rode my first Stinger tail a month ago, and it’s a dream board.
That’s assuming I’m correct when I say I think I’m a front foot surfer.
Stevo
thanks for the feedback guys !
our winter waves here are generally fast drops , hollow , and sometimes a bit of shoulder to play on . But sometimes they shut down HARD.
‘Stevo’, what are the dimensions of the "stinger’’ you’re riding ?
Is it your shape , or did someone else make it ? [ie : an original 1970s one ?]
cheers !
ben
Hey Chip,
Doesn’t look too disimilar to this.
Stevo
let’s see …
WHAT are the dimensions of the one on the left , please Mark / ‘Stevo’ ??
cheers !
ben
so , if that “stinger” on the left is 7’ …
who can tell me how wide , what width nose and tail , and where [how far up] the wings are , as well as the tail tip to tip measurement , please ?
( None of these dimensions were given on that GandS site , unfortunately … thanks heaps for the link , “Stevo” !)
okay… thanks for any help !
ben
chippy, I can tell you like the stinger type boards . why not go along the lines of the drifta, and go a bit wider in the arse. I see by your template it is 6_ 6’6. try 6’2 x 19& 1/4 to 20. 2&3/8 swallow tail flyer. I have an order at the moment for a 6’1x19&1/4 x2&3/8fishy type thing as I prefer the modern shape and so does the punter it will be a swallow tail flyer shorty. thats my 2 bobs worth.
thanks John !
how do these dimensions sound / look to you … Do you think the wings should be further back and less pronounced ?
and , what sort of nose and tail rocker is in the one you’re making ?
what blank are you using ?
cheers mate !
ben
p.s. - any shots of it , please ?
Well chip , I will be using a burford 6’8j. asked for a 6’4 but got a 6’8. I think they have to much money. the rocker will start about 2 inches down from the tip of the blank , I haven’t measured it but I always put a fair bit in if I can.it will be flat thru the guts but have a mediocre to lots of tail kick…this board is for 1 to 4 foot beachies, single to double concave , I am doing a 6’4 for the same guy out of the same blank. speeedfins the deadly fiberglass jobs.
I don’t go into rocker in detail I sort of do it by eye and use fairly rockered up blanks the burford p’s and j’s. for a flatter more semi fish reborn 80’s thruster I love the 6’7b ,beautiful.
as for your wings ,yeah they look ok but I would try a wider tail. I usually take my wings in 1/4 to 1/2 an inch and I only use them to upset the outline as I don’t like hips so I wack a stinger in and have a straightish rail back to the tail.
thanks John !
how far back are the wings on your board going to be , and how wide will the tail be , tip to tip .
And what will be the nose and tail widths , also , please ?
…cheers mate !
ben
the stingers will be about an inch behind the front fins the tail about 4.5inches. as for nose and tail I haven’t marked it out yet.
My thougths are…when riding a wave thats about overhead, I want to ride with my foot more towards the tail of the board for more control, usually a board for these condition will have a tail not so pulled back so you can ride further back. I’m thinking the tail end migth not be wide enough, even if you’re a front foot surfer and want to ride it further up…I think with that tail it may track a little too much and might be hard to turn and maneuver when you needed it to. However, I’m not saying that the design won’t work…thinking maybe a little more pulled in at the nose, less extreme wing, and slight larger tail area. Keep the wide point an inch or two above center to incorporate you’re front foot surifng. Cool design though.
thanks Turbo , some good comments there .
It seems I could do either the left or right hand shapes in my comparison photo …
still thinking it through , as to which I would ride more …perhaps the wider version in smaller than chest high conditions .
Around 10" up sounds good for the wing / flyer , in my mind , John , and I guess , doing that will mean I will get the wider tail and tail tip to tip measurements too …
I guess the rocker[s] , rails and bottom contour[s] will play a big part to , in how I surf the board / how the board surfs.
not to mention fin[s] placement[s] …
… anyone ?
cheers !
ben
Chip, Ben to Ben, that board begs to be a single fin… If it was my board I’d vee the the last third out the tail keep it flat under the chest, roll the nose … Stingers way up are mighty cool looking… Chip, really I don’t know jack, I just post here {:+ )
