Anybody in Florida. . . .

My in-laws live in Orlando, and we’re going down to spend the weekend with them in Cocoa Beach. I understand that some of the beaches south of there have been closed down to non-residents because of hurricane damage. I’ve tried calling the Longboard House’s surf report for the last couple of days, but have gotten no answer. Does anyone have any info on beach closings? I assume that Cocoa will still be accessible.

Also, most of my surfing in Florida has been at Sebastian and Indialantic…what breaks in Cocoa should I check out? I’m hoping for a fun swell to ride my new hollow wooden surfboard. Maybe my wife will take some pics and I’ll post them as requested.

Thanks for the info.

I’m sure you’ll be fine around cocoa, my great-uncle lives down there, right off the banana river, and only suffered some surge damage…

On another note… what days will you be in orlando?? I’m driving down the 15th to see an old friend, help rebuild , then surf around NSB, st augustine, and jax on the way back. Would i be able to steal a glance at your hollowed beauty? pretty please?

We’ll be in Cocoa on sat and sun, then orlando on mon and tues…then headed back home to south carolina. I’d be happy to let you ride it, but it sounds like we’re gonna miss eachother.

go north to playalinda…or to ponce inlet… I’ll be over there for the choppiness…beggars can’t be choosers…

Surfed Melbourne this past Sunday.Only problem is no parking in most spots.Lot’s of junk on the beach and some

of it washes back into the water.Officers club, etc closed.

Surfed Indialantic today after work. Waves were choppy but fun and should be building for the weekend. Most of the local oceanfront parks are closed and nearly all of the beach access stairs are either washed away or damaged. You shouldn’t have a problem if you decide to go south of Cocoa Beach, you may have to look for empty parking lots across the street to park in and walk over to the beach. There is a big National Kidney Foundation Pro/Am contest this weekend at Coconuts in Cocoa Beach, something to check out and people watch perhaps. Pretty much any of the streets in Cocoa Beach are a safe bet, just be sure to bring quarters for the meters. All of the beaches at Patrick AFB are closed currently.

Check out the surfing forum at 2ndlight.com. This site has useful surf-related information on Central FL surf, primarily between Cocoa and Indialantic (but also up to New Smyrna and down to Sebastian). Includes current conditions, tide info, and a cam or two. You can usually find several threads about which spots are open/closed (due to hurricanes), good/bad, etc. Unfortunately, you encounter quite a few threads more akin to surfermag.com than swaylocks (immature/offensive postings and behavior that wouldn’t be tolerated here). Nonetheless, a good resource.

When I am down there I mostly surf Patrick AFB, which I understand is closed, and a couple spots in Satellite Beach.

Longboard House was damaged in the storm. The entire front of the store (where they sell clothes) was damaged pretty badly. Fortunately, the board shop in the back of the store (and all of the boards) escaped damage and is open.

sorry i’m going to miss you, maybe next time i make a trip to james island…

Ponces is another option , considering i’ll be a short paddle (cross the channel from NSB) to it
