Anyone have any info about this WEIRD Takayama

My buddy Jeff got a hold of this one…  I again turn to the best repository of acarane surf knowledge on the planet, Swaylocks!

Cool looking egg shape, if it’s marked in any way it’s under the tint.  No serial or sig found anywhere.  Anyone have an idea of a timeframe, model name, design theory, etc.?

We were wondering about the finbox- what’s the brand, how it works, etc…  looked to me like a wide based fin just screws in with tabs at either end, since there were two plates left in the box.

More photos, finbox and bottom:

Here’s where it gets weird.  See that rocker shot?  See the nose flip?  No, you don’t.  Because that’s the TAIL!  What the hell?  Discuss.

i think that is a wave set fin box not sure though cant remember the name of it but it should be from the late 60’s, that thig is wierd indeed

Maybe the original scorpion model

Cheers

Has to be late 60s to about 1971 timeframe. Sure looks like a WAVESET box. Can’t really tell with the truncated photo. If it is a WAVESET, it should say so inside the box. The one screw that’s in the pic is the type they used. If there’s actually a plate in the box that slides, it’s a 2nd generation Fins Unlimited. Known as a “Vari-set”. Those had a front and rear plate, and were adjustable.

I’ll bet that thing rides UNREAL

This is the best picture I have of a Fins Unlimited Vari-set.
Can you put up a shot of the entire fin box on that Takayama??

To me it looks like the fin box was put in at some later time. I recall seeing some of dt's boards from that time with glass on fins If memory serves, they would have been a Greenough style flex fin
