Anyone sprayed future through a spray gun?

Hey Guys

How did it spray??

Any thinning required???

Drying times???

Sand between coats???

Quallity of finish???

Poly and epoxy???

Cheers

On a number of occasions. I use it to thin down finish sprays. Sprayed it on both polyester and epoxy. Future is acrylic(?) by the way. Adds a nice sheen to the final product I find.

Use it all the time in small and large pattern airbrushing. No thinning needed, but watch spraying too heavy, it’s hard to see how much is going on.

Dean…what do you mean “to thin down finish sprays”? what are you thinning?

Ratio?

Would you elaborate a little more?

Similar question for you Pete.

What kind of ratio do you use?

Mahalo

One of the finish sprays I had was a little bit thick so I made in runnier by adding some Future to it. Worked nicely. As for ratio, once it looked runny enough.

MDS , Deanbro ,PeteC, SenergyT…

Are you guys using using “Future Floor Finish” or something else?

I’ve looked at Lowe’s , Albertsons and Target. Can’t find it…I’ve seen several products that have “Future Finish” in them…

Post a photo maybe??? maybe I shop at the wrong stores… I’m using a product as a top coat on sanded finish boards but it’s not Future. It’s low grade so don’t ask me to post it…works great to blend in repairs…apply it with an old cotton shirt…

Hey Ray

I think Trevor just got the same stuff that you get, and we have just been using the technique you showed us.

We just got a couple new spray guns so the idea of spraying it on seems interesting, but I’d like to know thinning ratios and stuff.

I don’t think I’ve seen it around here either.

Professionals use Elmers glue mixed in Tempura.

Use a High Quaily Latex white for the base

Tempura for the color

Add a little Elmers (White)

Do what you want. I just couldn’t stand reading this post.

Hey SD! Do you thin the Elmers? or does it just get thinned in the mixing?

Do you mix the tempra into the latex? or is it spray the latex then the tempra? Elmers in both?

Mahalo

I use future floor polish to thin acrylic paint for airspray

I think the original question was asking about 100% future floor polish with a spray gun as some kind of a final coat?

Is this what you mean by** finish spray**?

Hi Todd: Not to name drop however the way I did it when i was at a larger production shop was to Use a high quality latex 10% - 20% + 80% -90% Tempura of desired color.

Premix the color you want then add it to the latex. In your spray bottle add a tea spoon of elmers,. This is the formula to spray. if it’s too thick thin with water.

I use distilled. Devilbliss spayguns are ideal. However if you can make a Harbor Freight Spray Gun Work God Bless You!

Retail Shop boards hold their color with this method.

SD

As always…you are the friggin MAN!

Sounds like a lot of work for a finish spray. Are there no surf specific finish sprays that give a really white smooth finish?

You should’nt spray your boards. Send them out to a professional. I was only stating how some retail boards are done. Keep it garage style if you like.

This was just one of many ways to airspray boards. Surfing is the last priority of any large company so therefore no off the shelf products are available.

No ratio, straight from the bottle. I rarely use it as a clearcoat, but always for thinning bottled acrylic paint. The amount needed to thin depends on the airbrush, I don’t really measure it. I judge paint viscosity by watching it drip off the brush used for mixing, or just how it mixes in general. After mixing, test a sample to see if you’ve got enough paint in it, then strain it. For clearcoating, I use Krylon acrylic clear rattle cans for repairs, and clear polyurethane automotive paint on surftech type boards. Future is just not durable enough for polishing. I poly glosscoat everything else, it’s a lot less hassle for me than paint.

I want to try the latex tempura elmers trick because i like trying new things. I cant figure out if theres a big difference between tempura and tempera paint. It looks like tempura is dry powder and tempera is liquid and washable and made for kids and posters. . Anyone know if thats accurate? And could you  in theory just ask our good friend in the hardware store to mix you up the color you want using high qual white latex as a base and have them can it ? Just wondering. Id rather mix em myself but my friends a glidden rep. For the record ive painted a few houses and benjamin moore is AWESOME.

Ps. Thinking about spraying it through a garden sprayer. Just because i like experimenting and its a learning board. Also thought about spraying a hotcoat through the garden sprayer too. But spraying poly in an unsecure areas sketchy.

I thought I had hit on the ideal finish about 25-30 years ago, after wet sandoing to 600, I hit on the idea of using Futura floor finish sprayed on so I wouldn’t have to go through the compound stage.

As thin as it is, it was a tough one to start with, it wanted to run in the rockers and on the rails, but i managed to get by that and they looked pretty darn good.

Delivered the first of the boards finished off like that, immediately started getting phone calls, my board is all chalky white, it got totaly dull and semi opaque once it had been in the salt water. I didn’t follow through on using it again, I also don’t know what the problem was at that time, it seems other have used it without that problem. Also I tried to hit it with compound, the mineral spirits in the compound base ate into the Futura instantly

I learned what I have from the teeth marks in my ass

For the record future floor polish is now called pledge floor care with future shine.
