Apprenticeship in Australia or in California

Hello,

I am preparing a master degree in oceanography and coastal management in France, and I want to make a 6 months or less apprenticeship in Australia or in california.

I am intereested in various fields such as:

  • Artificial reef.

  • Coastal geomorphology.

  • Integrated coastal gestion.

  • Coastal management.

This apprenticeship would be from April to September, if you think you can help me, could you please send me a private message or answer this post!

Thanks!

April is pretty soon to be thinking about now from an academic perspective, but you know well, by now, if you’re completing a master’s degree, that your best bet as far as finding the right place to go do further research/apprenticeship kind of work is to hit the literature in the area of work that you’re interested in and directly contact the senior researcher associated with the publication.

If you’re bringing your own money, there are VERY few people out there that will deny you the opportunity to join their research group. If you’re looking for them to provide funding, April will likely be too soon, unless they’ve got whopping budgets.

Scripps is a good call…there’s another Oceanography institute on the east coast of very high repute as well…can’t remember the name off hand.

Also, in a more industrial type of setting, there are a number of companies in Souther California that are working on artificial reefs/coastal reclamation/reinforcement. Big business down there, especially around Encinitas/Leucadia/Solana Beach where plenty of million dollar houses are on the brink of sliding in to the pacific due to erosion. A quick google search will provide you with a list of companies working in your fields of interest. Chances are this is a better bet than the academic route where a relatively short 5-6 month term means that they won’t really get anything of substantial use out of you.

oh I meant UC Santa Cruz.

If you are interested in artificial reefs then you could try Professor K Black of Waikato University in New Zealand.

Prof Black’s consulting business has a website:

contact details will be on there.

stay away from the east coast, the waves suck in comparison with the rest of the world, the water’s cold and only getting colder, and wrightsville is packed goobers
