Ah, I’d love to, but there’s one small problem. Okay, make that about 450,000 small problems, about 10,000 shown here. And the little suckers keep growing and growing and growing… so it’s hello, anti-inflammatories, let’s go to work. .

We call it "gloom." It used to be "June Gloom." Now it seems to last all summer.
Of course I could drive 45 minutes in Los Angeles freeway traffic and get this-

yes , boogs* went left at waimea , in the 1990s , and got a cover shot on a few magazines at the time [ he didn't do it to get photographed , though ...he did it only because he was sick of getting dropped in on , on the right ]
cheers !

(chuckling) yep, it’s what I do. 10K of them, when they get to 8-10 times original volume I’ll put 'em in bigger mesh bags at about 2500/bag, when they get to about an inch then down to about 200-250 per bag for final growout. If half survive to get to market size, I’m a happy man.
That’s in one location where I work with a partner, in another spot I use a different system, Australian in origin, that may give 70% survival to market size with a lot less work…I hope. That one I run pretty much all by myself. It’s quiet mornings in a boat, bird sounds, knuckleheads in kayaks… worse places to be than Doc’s world.
doc…
Geez, that sounds nice Doc. Can you even call it work?
hahaha, yep, I saw it too Ben…
I just thought it was my goofy bias.
Hello Doc.
I’m a virtual nobody here, , a newbe.
I’ve read a lot of threads here over the years, and your posts have been some of the most memorable and have also meant the most to me. Mostly because you’re not all wrapped up in this surfboard building shit like myself and so many others here.
Keep on harvesting the wonderful creatures from the deep.
VH.
My summer started on Monday. As I was driving in to work I saw a dead bobcat on the side of the road on the 56 freeway. I thought to myself that it was a pity, since it was such a pretty little animal. Little did I know that it was an omen of pending doom. I got to my desk checked my email and saw a meeting invitation that was between me my boss and someone from HR. So… in a nutshell I was laid-off, down-sized, right-sized, given the axe, terminated, etc… My first thoughts weren’t about money, but they were about how I was going to be able to start surfing in the middle of the day and about being able to play more with my family. Yesterday I took my son snorkeling and the viz was amazing. Today we went swimming in the bay. I am starting to think about what to do next, but I need to make sure that I enjoy the time off that I have right now. On the bright side… I had a better day than the bobcat.
Answers in order- and bear in mind it’s after the bars closed out here on the US east coast. And yes, I was there.
Chrisp - yes, I call it work, but an avocation is work too. In that last photo you can just aboiut see where I grew up- half a century, full circle, here I am again. Had I got into it, oh, 40 years back- too much money, I’d be doing rehab for about the 4th time, y’know?
VH - hey, man, I’m a virtual bozo. Really. I know a little, I blather a lot. On those rare occasions when I shave, I see an idiot in the mirror. Don’t take yourself, or me, or anybody else too seriously. I try to give a little when I can, when I may know something worthwhile that I can pass on. But, really, I’m just an old offshore fisherman who, for his sins, ran a surf shop for 30+ years and paid attention. Again, nothing special.
But…we’re talking about surfboards here. Not curing cancer, not making the blind see. We are talking about making things that are for helping rich first world people have fun, albeit sometimes in very poor places where they wonder what the f#ck we are doing when they have to struggle to eat every day…or every other day. It’s really cool to play with them, it’s fascinating to think about how they work-but that’s intellectual fun. Please don’t get me going on ‘surf theory’ versus real engineering.
In any event, enjoy life. Say things, even if you’re not absolutely on solid ground. Stick your chin out, take risks, go for it ( as, perhaps, an add-on to the surf tips thread) and have fun. Life is too damned short. Eat well, drink well, lots of stuff…you have as of now ) just one July 28th, 2012 and you will never have another.
enjoy every second of it
doc…
" In any event, enjoy life " *
that belongs on a " life tips sub forum " thread
everyone tattoo it backwards on your foreheads so when [we] brush teeth / shave / pick nose in front of the mirror ..well,
priorities in place
well said , Doc !
* as my brother said ,
"if you can't enjoy life , you may as well be dead "
