Had a 6-3 R(?) laying around with two pieces broken off the nose. I had some PU glue from a stringer glue up so I stuck the bigger piece back on.
Had enough to shape a 5-5 x 19 and a quarter RNF. As I glued it back together, the name of that Lost video kept going through my head, so I used that outline for it…
Being so short, I figured I’d never ride it, and a buddy of mine residing in Encinitas agreed to do some artwork on it post glassing. He suggested a resin splash with purple…
I took it over to my buddy’s house and Wade went to work on it… That’s a gold and copper leaf checkerboard. And yes, several beers were consumed in the process.
Then came the really cool stuff…
Finished painting:
I’ll post pics of the finished product later (post gloss and polish).
That board is rad. Seen a couple of Hendrix boards now, and that one kinda takes the cake.
Thanks, I like the gold and copper leaf mixed media thing he’s got going there. Yep, Hendrix has been done alot, but he remains an icon and one of my all-time favorite musicians, so having him hanging around as artwork is a cool thing for me.
that is absolutely beautiful. “aint got a bone in his jelly back”–hendrix. Thats one board you’d hate to wax up, but feels great to strip on a flat day.
Just curious… how does resin bond to gold and coper leaf? any risk of delam?
The bond seems very good, but I think the risk of delam seems very likely. However, it would only be separation of gloss from sanded hotcoat. Therefore, structurally, it’s not that big of a deal. Aesthetically, it could be a disaster! I think the “delam” would occur from sharp raps to the deck, like a knee or hopping up a little heavy footed. This board, while I made it to be capable of being ridden, is destined for the wall, so the delam risk is not a concern for me. I was walking my dog this morning (as if that has any bearing on the conversation!) and it occurred to me that I may be able to do the leaf right on the foam, if I do it, I’ll post up with results. The stuff is so thin that you could see glass weave in the leaf after application so foam texture showing through may help glass adhesion.
